"The choices that I have made have been in terms of what I feel the Council would have wanted. Each of us had joined the Police Force here in order to help the citizens. Each of us had offered assistance openly. And each of us had neglected our own personal wants in order to follow as others wished us to." He hadn't disagreed with a moment of what he'd done, however. Each decision he'd made he believed to have been the right one at that time. But now, while he was truly free from all regulation that The Order held over him, he was finally able to start making decisions based on free choice alone.
"I wish to do as I want to instead of as they would tell me to." He didn't say who 'they' were because there was only one group of people who had true control over his actions. "And what I would like is for us both to be free to do whatever we want, whenever we want to."
"Considering the degree to which our situation is out of our control, that might be in our best interest," she said carefully, trying to balance her impulse which was to say that was what she wanted as well and her reason. Reason argued that it might be best for him to still follow the way provided or pointed out to him already.
"I think," she paused, bringing her other hand up to mirror his on her cheek, instead framing his opposite one. "I would like that very much," she admitted with equal quietness, despite that there was no one to over hear them, and no one here to care or order otherwise. No war to give forth other pressing priorities...nothing the same, but for the one thing she treasured most. Truly, only her love and care for Anakin rivaled her devotion to her people, and in a completely different way of course. It was another moment before she pursed her lips thoughtfully and asked, tentatively, "Did he say...anything else?"
His relief was immediate. If Padmé hadn't agreed with him, then he'd move back in to his previous position straight away. He'd take his place back with the Police Force and continue as he had been. And he wouldn't question her request even once. Only because it was her. As it stood though, it seemed as though he'd made a right decision, this time. They could concentrate on the break this time provided instead of worrying over formalities and duty.
When the conversation reverted back to Luke again though, his grin faltered. He turned quiet for some time, unsure as to what exactly to tell her. Was she referring to their final words together, or did she simply wish to know more about him? What information would help, and what would hurt? "...of you?"
Her smile up at him softened more, if possible, some of the sadness seeping through, drops of water on paper, not enough to tear, but enough to thin.
"Of me, of you, of anything about....us..." she trailed off, letting her hand against his face reach up to brush longer strands of hair behind his ear, not that they stayed, but it was something to do, a motion to make. "It is completely understandable if he did not," she added quickly, not meaning to make either of them feel bad in retrospect or otherwise. "I admit I am simply...curious, too much perhaps."
"He said many things. Leia too. They were grateful for the time they were given to spend with each of us. And for the time we both have together. They had both told me countless times that they enjoyed times as simple as just being able to sit with you." Though until the day she encountered her own future, it was doubtful she could ever fully comprehend how big of a deal it was for Luke and Leia.
"They love you, Padmé. And they always shall." The time that they had spent together wouldn't be left forgotten by their children. That was what he was most thankful for.

And that was as true as anything.
