ooc: look at me, not the last one on the infopost train!
Although just for the new guy at the moment. Maybe I'll be unlazy later and type something up for my other boys, who knows.
So who is Toby Logan, you ask? Or maybe you don't ask, but I'm going to tell you anyway, because that is how infoposts roll.
Toby's from the Canadian crime-drama (...hence why I'm not even BOTHERING to stealth with this guy, because COME ON.) The Listener, which, if you're American, you might've seen briefly on NBC back in 2009 before they cancelled it. Well, the Canadian production team decided no, they weren't done, and a year and a half later the show came back for season two... in Canada, at least. In the show, Toby's a paramedic based out of St Luke's hospital in Toronto, but he's here in Fandom about thirteen years before canon starts.
Toby would tell you he's just an average kid who had a less than idyllic childhood: he never knew his father, and his mother turned him over to foster care when he was about six, where he's bounced from home to home for the last nine years, earning him a reputation as something of a problem child. The real reason for his "problems" is that he's actually a telepath, and so was being constantly bombarded with other people's thoughts before he learned meditation techniques that helped keep them out. And then, of course, being able to block out casual thoughts most of the time didn't mean he was going to always do so, and had no real issues with reading people's thoughts if he thought it'd work out to his advantage somehow, and so came off as creepy due to knowing things he really shouldn't, or acting out for seemingly unprovoked reasons. Like burning down a foster parent's garage because the guy spent a lot of time thinking about doing some very bad things to a very wee Toby.
So, yeah. Toby can read thoughts and has no real ethical hangups about doing so. Which is not to say he's going to run around blackmailing people with the information he's gained, because he is generally a pretty nice guy. It's just that, well, in his own words: "When god gives you free cable, you gotta think he expects you to do a little surfing". Hence the username. Basically he's just gonna do so to get cues as far as saying the right thing. If he's talking to a girl he has a crush on, for example, and she asks him "what's your favourite movie?", he might answer with whatever movie *she* is thinking of at that moment. Or try to gain favour with authority figures by being all "hey, that show you missed last night, that's making you cranky? I totes recorded it and can burn you a copy."
ETA A THING I FORGOT: Toby's the only telepath that he knows of from his world, so it's not something he's gonna be announcing right off the bat. THAT SAID, this is Fandom, he's bound to be found out sooner or later, and we'll see how things go from there :D
