I finally saw it, and agree with your assessment. I admit I was rooting for Sylvia until this episode, but I could see that it was me rooting for her, not Christopher. Why did she suddenly have cancer though? Does she really or was it a manipulation? And what's the book ending?
In the original tetrology, Armistice Day and Christopher's choice occurs at the end of book three. No, Sylvia doesn't have cancer. The Cancer/tree was a test to see which would get Christopher to rush to Groby. Book four is depressing. It mainly consists of Valentine (pregnant) worrying if being the mistress of a married man was a wise choice, especially as Christopher has a difficult time adjusting financially to his changed status after the war. Sylvia is still around bugging and manipulating everyone.
It was the commentary on how difficult it was for men to adjust emotionally after the war, but it was a depressing one. True, but it would have been a total downer if they had ended the series that way.
