1) No, it can't slow down a computer.
2) That is correct, you solved your own question.
3) Its because too much data becomes cached, you need to reboot once in a while.

Sometimes, you need to access task manager via Ctrl-alt-del and check which processes are using the most virtual memory (Firefox uses a ton, but its still better than IE).

Outlook is notoriously the same, its like a slow, lumbering giant, just to access email, you're better off accessing it via a browser.

Let me know if I help, or didn't. If you have any other questions, I'll be happy to try and help.

Back when I was doing IT work, if a computer ran slow enough, long enough, we would just wipe the drive and clear out any clutter. That usually helped, was like starting the computer out brand new.

who says i am mad :D am i not allowed to have a bad day? :D

see! YOU in specific were the person i had HOPED to respond to this because you are so awesome with things involving things i am dumb about :D

in reference to the start up disabling...how? explain.

i just did the prefetching thing

i am going to try the crap cleaner in a second (stupid comcast sucks tonight)

i have spybot search'n' destroy. i've been running that at least once a month...

you and anthony both reccomended me to AVG... so as far as spyware/bot and viruses...i shouldn't have me none as i just scanned not to long ago...

what really puzzles me is how i let this happen, when all i did was install MS office, aim, firefox and irc..then when i saw an old past time game of mine go on sale at comp usa...

oh wait -_- dvix, tablet driver, open canvas...errr..WELL..I BROWSE THE NET SAFELY! <.<; that porn doesn't count ( ... )

click start, run, type msconfig, press enter. Click startup. Uncheck everything you dont need.

Just a note, the prefetching will actualy slow down your computer for a few days, but this is normal! Windows needs to see what programs you run most frequently again so you are not loading things into memory you don't need.

That version of firefox is probably the best thing for you to try though, it uses almost half the ram as firefox 2.

First of all, a laptop is a computer, so you are quite welcome to call it so :)

1. Your dad is pulling your leg. You might notice a slight lag if you have over 500 objects or so. If you have set a folder to thumbnail view, there will be lag with any more than 10 objects. Still, it's good house-keeping to keep a clean desktop. Delete the shortcuts to programs you don't use often, put your files into My Documents. You can find your icons more easily this way, and you can even see the background picture!

2. You have somehow activated StickyKeys, a great little feature that will hold down Ctrl or Shift or Alt for you while you press other buttons. Great for one handed typists. To turn it off, go to COntrol Panel & Accesibility Option. Uncheck "Use StickyKeys" and click Settings, then uncheck "Use Shortcut" to prevent accidentally activating it again. Do the same for FilterKeys and ToggleKeys too.

3. If you are running Windows XP Tablet Edition, make sure you run Microsoft Update to patch any bugs and security flaws. Tablet Edition is ( ... )

Besides everything that's already been mentioned...

Make folders on your desktop and drop all your less frequently used stuff in them. Then they're just one more click away, but not cluttering your desktop. That won't slow you down but it will do wonders for your sanity.

Get an external harddrive and get most of the files you have off the computer. The more C drive space you have the faster the computer will run.

Uninstall every program you can that you never use and don't really need...

Reboot the computer every few days to keep it happy...

Set your firefox, netscape, ie etc. settings to clear each day.

Defrag once a month

Remove spyware at least once a week and avoid sites that you know put tons of it on your computer if possible.
