Money, money, money.

I think that whatever I'll earn at Philmont is about as much as I'm spending to go there. I've had to buy hiking boots as well as a memory stick (because my mum and dad won't let me bring the laptop that I already have...), I've had to withdraw some money from the bank to cover initial expenses, I have to repay my mum for the bus fare (the shuttles ( Read more... )

I know what you mean about the news! Last summer, when the bombings in London happened, it was a big deal at camp because 2 of the counselors were from the UK, and 2 others had entire branches of their families from the UK. But now, I have to be reminded that they happened, or else it just completely slips my mind. Even big issues don't seem to sink in when you're overwhelmed by all the girls who need your attention.

Cool to know that you know about the away-at-camp-away-from-the-world news phenomenon! It's so hard to explain, and it must be hard for someone who's never been to camp to understand.

Even big issues don't seem to sink in when you're overwhelmed by all the girls who need your attention.

That's so true, and not just at camp. It happens to me whenever I have a lot to do. Last night, Geoff said, "So. Thoughts about Ken Lay's and Jeff Skilling's convictions?"

Pause. Then I said, "...they were convicted?" Inside, I was thinking, I HAVE TO PACK FOR PHILMONT. I DON'T CARE ABOUT KEN LAY AND JEFF SKILLING!

...yeah.

Reagan died while I was Guatemala, and it was big news to everyone in the group, but by the time we got back to the US it was kind of old news, so we never got the full impact. Definitely an interesting phenomenon.

Wow. That must've been interesting, hearing such big news as that while in a foreign country. Sometimes I wonder what kind of coverage the U.S.'s domestic news receives in other countries.
