Well, "the number"
will be changed
, which means that "new HD DVD movies ... won't play on some players" which will absolutely thrill consumers and speed uptake of HD DVD. ETA of the new number: around 3 weeks from arrival of the new number.

True, the number is old news.
In the meantime Geremia, Arnezami et al now have a method of retrieving the VUK:

Allows retrieval of Volume IDs. Can't be revoked. The authentication between media and player completely broken.
