I think you did a great job keeping both Neal and Peter in character, especially impressive that this is your first time writing for White Collar [I haven't been following the debate but I have for other fandoms written H/C but for White Collar I can't think how to do it and keep both characters true] Well done!
The comfort, followed by restraint, was perfectly in character--although in my mind, there isn't much h/c that's not in character for these two, restrained or not!
This is how to me Neal would handle things. Not some hysterical or outward display, but (almost) alone. He wouldn't wallow for long and learn to live with the hole in his heart.
The shift in tenses threw me ever so slightly, but I'm definitely with damietta in thinking this would be the way Neal would handle grief, especially at this point in his life. Loved Peter having caught the tiny hints Neal must have dropped unknowingly during the day and being there for him.
