The good thing about school is that unless you're studying something ridiculously stupid, it's never a waste of time. Even if it's boring or esoteric it's still a skill and a merit to show to the world of one's hard work.
That being said, time off can be just as if not more important. The key is to not waste a moment of it. If one just hangs around in the same city, and works a bit and hangs with friends then it really is time down the drain.
But if you go away, learn something new, and find some new direction, then it's all aces. And being worldly makes girls sexy ;)
