SPN Art: See Dean Grin

Mar 27, 2007 17:06

As you may have noticed, I love the mid-century "modern" cartoon style. To rec some things I've been enjoying lately: the Cartoon Modern blog, Tick Tock Toys packaging design archives, Mid-Century Illustrated flickr pool for illustrated ephemera, Retro Kid flickr pool for illustrated children's books, and animated shorts (my YouTube playlist).

super cute! it definitely has the feel you were going for and as an Illustration student i can tell you it's definitely a very "marketable" type of piece, very clean and cute.

as for composition, this is nicely balanced. most people tend to have an intuitive sense for what looks good, because the idea of creating a successful composition in general is just "making something that is appealing to the eye." the rule of thirds just basically says that any of the green dots on this picture are places it'd be a good idea to put whatever you want to be the focus of the composition because the eye is naturally drawn there anyway. the eye is also more naturally drawn to simple shapes as opposed to complex ones, which (along with our psychological attraction to faces) is why we tend to look at people's heads first in any given composition featuring people. usually diagonal movements within the composition are the most successful. um. but you really don't have to get so caught up in all that, this works pretty well; the only suggestion i'd ( ... )

YOU ARE SO HELPFUL, THANK YOU! *CAPSLOCKS* And you left me a link and everything!

I had the same thought about the figures being smackdab in the middle. And with all the little elements scattered around, it just, I don't know, feels kind of cluttered.

Thanks so much. :D

no problem at all! happy to help. and hahaha, i definitely don't think it's cluttered. the centralized work looks here with the whole piece, in my opinion.

This is very interesting, the style has a very cohesive feel to it and it's always fun to see new types of art. I love the fire in the grave and how you have all the colors in blocks shifted slightly out of sync. Also, it's funny how Sam's hair has an identity of its own where it's instantly recognizable even in such a different style :)

The thirds rule, as far as I know, refers mainly to horizon lines or where you want the perspective to be. Having something in the middle of the page is usually boring, but you wouldn't want to have the focus too far away either without a very good reason. I don't see any problems with your composition, there's sky, but not too much, the figures are focal, somewhat central, but not completely in the center, and the smaller lined parts aren't cluttering up, they're enough to fill but not too much to irritate.

Aw, thank you so much, you are very kind! And thank you for talking about composition with me, too. I'm glad it didn't come across as cluttered for you; it feels a little busy to me.

I've never drawn in a fandom that's visual-based (video-based?) before, and it's neat to see how people interpret characters who have such a fixed visual representation in canon. And I've been enjoying your work lately! Have I told you that? I don't think I've told you that. I am shamefully comment-challenged.

I'm very literal, a bit too literal sometimes, so tv-fandoms with their established visuals have always been my main attractors. And I guess the literal nature of my art is also why I always enjoy seeing work where there's another dimension of creativity- in interpretation. I was just looking through your journal at all the artwork and they're really fascinating. I love the way you don't just do faces or people but have your own take on the things that probably wouldn't ever occur to me. I'm glad you liked my drawings :) Would you mind me adding you to my friends' list?

Zoinks! This is great! I am still just getting my feet wet in SPN and have not really internalized the charcters, so I am mostly just responding to the effectiveness of the mid-century feel. I especially love the loooooong sedan.

Another fun site for images from this era is Plan 59.

I'd never heard of that site! I think it's my new favorite site in all the world! I mean, THERE ARE BRONCOS THERE.

I've been watching SPN since the pilot, but it didn't GRAB ME grab me until sometime in the second season. It's kind of a wacky show, I admit. But it's the really fun kind of wacky.

Thank you!

Broncos THAT ARE STUCK IN A CABBAGE LIKE ALIEN FINGERS. I discovered Plan 59 through BIL. This icon is from one of his paintings.

Are you also familiar with James Lileks's site? Lots of categorized ephemera there. Hmmm, in fact, it looks like the mom on the splash page is using a wand to unload her dishwasher...

Ack! Too many URLs in one post. BIL should be "my B-i-L," that is to say, my sister's husband, not some freaky nickname like the Family Circus guy.
