How Can you start 29 years into a story?

I read a poem one day that stated..... on a persons tombstone.. its not the dates that matter, its the dash in the middle that means the most.. its the dash that represents the persons life. I honestly wouldn't know where to start describing my dash...... There have been so many ups and downs that have molded me into the man i have grown to be.
