Books that I have cherished

Dec 8: Books that I have cherished -- maybe read them so much the cover or spine wore off. for harrigan ( Prompts post)

I have been literally tearing into books from a young age. I have an early memory of being seven or so, sitting in my parents' closet working on a "my favorite animal" project. I very logically cut up a picture book on polar bears, glued quotes on lined paper, and tried to turn it in. The book said it better than I could.

Anyway, I'm not a big re-reader of books in general, but there are a few that I go back to again and again to revisit quotes that I love. I'll just end up sitting at the edge of my couch reading a couple pages at a time instead of finding the one line I loved.

List!
* Ender's Game - never giving money to OSC again because he's a homophobic douchebag, but this book is the best thing.
* The Hittchhiker's Guide Trilogy - this informed much of my sense of humor. I read the second one first, in fourth grade, and life was hilarious and awkward from there on out.
* A Confederacy of Dunces - you'll have to get through the first few chapters before you really get the feel for this book. After that it's all so smart and funny. There's a good essay in the middle about how gay people should have their chance to try ruling the world.
* Jeeves Series by PG Wodehouse - Any and all of the Jeeves books are incredibly entertaining and so, so well-written. I love how Bertie is always in a jam and has to escape his relatives and friends, and I love how he holds Jeeves in such high esteem (read: they are GAY FOR EACH OTHER) and it's all very lovely. Highly recommend!
* Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson - This is arguably very pretentious, and is so beautiful and I love it. Anne Carson took the remaining poetry fragments from Herakles's 6th task, and wrote it as a modern day high school-aged AU poem from the POV of the monster Geryon. Geryon is head-over-heels for Herakles, who metaphorically kills him when he isn't in love with him. "Then a miracle occurred in the form of a plate of sandwiches."
* Harry Potter - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
* Hamlet - I've only read this in totality once, but it's my go-to browsing book.

These are all super great!
