Prologue
“Sehun. Sehun- no- that’s not- Sehun!”
Oh Sehun, 20 years old, is currently spinning the camcorder to wherever sides he thinks its ok to face to because he also thinks it’s not working well for the past ten minutes, while Kim Jongdae, 22 years old, 2 years senior from the former is frustrated because he’s stuck with a kid in a rather challenging project. Although holding a camera and recording everything for later making it as a documentary film is really fun, Jongdae never thought he could end up with the little shit in front of him at the moment.
In class, Sehun is another typical sophomore, not yet a sophomore but not a freshman anymore. Coming late and half chewing foods that still in his mouth are some acts he often did whenever the lecturer had already started the class. Jongdae sits near the window and eyed him carefully from his chair, silently praying for the next project to not involve him together with the guy, although God decided to not granted his pray. Jongdae, meanwhile, is retaking the subject because he failed it on the second semester. Well, documentary was never in his skills though, he teamed up with a very smart guy last year but ended up failing it by himself, watching all his classmates moved onto the higher level of subject.
Again, Jongdae sighed for only-God-knows-how-many-times, now Sehun is smiling as if he had done something right-he rarely does so it’s understandable-holding up the camera and flip open the small monitor at the left side, “Aaaand we’re on!”
Jongdae’s smaller figure on the screen is trembling because of Sehun’s poor handling at recording with a smaller camcorder, and he is looking nowhere near thrilled.
Suddenly Sehun spins the camera to himself and starts sounding out weird chuckles. “Good day, it’s me Oh Sehun, and behind me,” he tries to adjust the camera to take shots of Jongdae as well, “…is my project partner, Kim Jongdae. On this very good day, we’re going to start our project of four months ahead, the study of the same sex’s various personalities living under the same roof! It’s a very difficult project I must say, remembering we have to bring camera and record people and analyze this and that-”
“Gimme that.” Jongdae snatched the camera from the narcissistic guy and records himself. “So, for this project, we,” he sighs at the word ‘we’, “decided to live together in a boarding house filled with guys whose ages are around or maybe older two, three years from us, and make a documentary film out of them.”
“Of course we have to beg for permission first, which is why we’re in front of the mentioned house right now, waiting for the owner to arrive. He should be here in fifteen minutes, at least that’s what he katalked me.” Sehun pushed his face beside Jongdae’s so that they could fit in the screen together.
Kim Junmyeon, 23 years old, is coming home from college all smiles and joyful walks, looking like an honored student which he is. Pushing the small gate open and enters the front yard of the male boarding house called ‘the sweet-Apgujeong’ (달콤한 압구정). Junmyeon never thought the name is cheesy, never once. So he went directly to the back door, where he took off his shoes and yells “I’m home!” even though no one is answering him.
He went to the kitchen, opened the fridge, took a bottle of water and finished it all immediately. The sun’s shining so bright today he could feel his throat screaming for some refreshment. Every day is kinda quiet in the house because the other tenants are out for college, part time job, mostly college, and some-or one-is just skipping class and went somewhere he doesn’t have any idea about. Junmyeon hums the soft tunes of his favorite song while casually walking to the living room, where he would turn on the fan, TV, stretches out his legs and relax.
Except the living room is currently occupied with two unfamiliar guys.
“Wha-” he’s jumping to the back a little bit, expecting the room to be empty just like the usual days.
“Oh here he is here he is,” the taller guy is standing abruptly, poking roughly on the other who’s caught taking a cookie out of a jar beside the TV remote. “Hello there, we’re sorry for breaking in, we’re the two new tenants who have spoken to you earlier, it’s really hot outside, and your front door is unlocked so- we uhh-”
“The front door is unlocked?” Kim Junmyeon’s expression looks mixed somewhere between angry and surprised.
“We’re really sorry though.” the guy who had finished swallowing the cookie took his turn to talk.
Junmyeon returns to his normal self again, it’s like he’s only angry about the front door being unlocked, not about the two guys-who might be dangerous-broke into the house.
“I don’t know, they’re just there, sitting and feeling as if the house is all theirs-I’m not angry about that though-but it’s just, I was really tired at that time and I’m sorry if my face hadn’t been a very welcoming face for them. So, they sat there, on the couch. Sehun was setting up a recording camera, while Jongdae, Jongdae (laughs) he took out a cookie and didn’t even know I came! They look like fun individuals so I thought that time, why not?” - Junmyeon, thoughts on Sehun & Jongdae the first time he met them.
“So uhh we’ve talked before, remember? On the phone, kakao talk,” Sehun smiles awkwardly at the elder and stretches out a hand, “I’m Oh Sehun, and this is my friend slash roommate-to-be, Kim Jongdae.”
Jongdae smiles and then chuckles, “Hi, how do you do?”
Junmyeon grows more relax after they introduced themselves, and so begin the process of talking about the project they’re currently working on.
“Is it okay if I turn on the camera? This is for the bloopers that Jongdae and I had already planned.” Sehun didn’t even let Junmyeon say yes to his request as he turns the camera on anyway and places it at the side.
“…Sure.” Junmyeon smiles.
Jongdae is halfway talking about how the documentary film needs real people, experiences, and point of views so they might have to take comments from Junmyeon, and all the other tenants as well. Junmyeon was all focusing and nodding understandingly until the sound of the back door creaking open caught by his ears.
“Just give me a second, that might be the tenant I’ve been waiting since this morning to let him know that his mom called earlier.”
Both of them just nodded politely and Sehun whispered “TMI.” seconds after he walked away.
The tenant that Junmyeon meant earlier is a medical major college student named Do Kyungsoo, 21 years old, a bit introverted and very sensitive especially about his body height. He wore all black that day, just like what he wore the day before, and the day before, and the day before, and the week before. Junmyeon smiles at his presence and Kyungsoo just eyes him with his original judging stares, no smile.
“What’s up.” He mumbles behind a glass of orange juice he just took a sip from.
“Your mom called this morning, said that she wants to talk to you about the house’s fee.”
“Oh okay. Thanks.”
“No problem, bro.”
Junmyeon walked back to the living room where the two of the new tenants are whispering quietly right now, they parted right away when Junmyeon comes in sight, Sehun sits calmly and Jongdae smiles brightly.
“Well, guys, say hello to your new home.”
“Wait, we didn’t even finish talking about the project.” Sehun straightens up.
“That’s okay I got the point already, psychology major, studying personalities, documentary, no big deal. I’ll talk it out with the rest of them.”
“…You sure?” Jongdae asks after he threw a slight glance at Sehun, unconvinced.
“Yeah, yeah, it’s okay. This is my house anyway, if they didn’t want to I could always persuade them, I would love to help your project.”
“That’s cool bro we really appreciate this! So uh we’re gonna start moving tomorrow morning, how’s that?” Sehun claps as if he had won something.
“Perfect I’ll just get the housekeeper set your room up. You guys wanna look at it first?”
“Nah.” “Yes!” Sehun shook his head politely while Jongdae glares at him. “…What? I thought that it might be better to have expectation so that we could be really happy about moving in tomorrow?!”
Junmyeon chuckles at the scene and accompany them up to the front gate where they bid good byes and he turned around, alone, figuring out ways to tell the other tenants about such project because when it comes to personalities, oh boy how they got really exceptional ones.
“So we were having dinner and I saw Junmyeon fidgeting in his seat and (laughs out loud) he would never do that if he didn’t have anything in mind and/or terrified to tell it to us. I mean really though, he’s the owner of the boarding house, yes, well technically it’s his parent’s but they placed all the responsibilities on him. It’s such a big deal for him. Yet he fidgets everytime he wants to talk about something serious. He’s kinda timid I have to admit. But sometimes he could be embarrassing too.” - Byun Baekhyun, 22 years old, Bucheon, Gyeonggi-Do, comments on Kim Junmyeon.
Everybody is simply busy chewing on their dinners, half of the tenants are home already, including Byun Baekhyun, who’s currently trying to chew a piece of meat inside his mouth, eyes on TV. Suddenly the other tenant whose favorite TV show is going to broadcast in about few more seconds is snatching the TV remote and changed the channel as fast as the lightning struck.
Park Chanyeol, 22 years old, unaware of the danger that might come to him in any second.
“I wouldn’t have done that if I were you.” Zhang Yixing, the foreign tenant at the age of 23 years old, has already understood the mind set of Byun Baekhyun, pointed back to the pouting shorter guy who’s sitting with his one leg up on the chair at the dining table.
“What?” Chanyeol asks confusedly.
“WHO TOLD YOU TO CHANGE THE CHANNEL YOU DUMBO.”
“Baekhyun likes to call Chanyeol with ‘Dumbo’ (chuckles). No no no that’s not the term ‘dumb’ combined with letter ‘o’, it’s a Disney character. A small elephant with big ears? Yes that one. Because Chanyeol had very big ears, (brings both his hands and gestures a pair of big ears). And although I said it’s not the term ‘dumb’ but Baekhyun kinda relate it to that because it’s still has ‘dumb’ in it. He thinks Chanyeol is dumb. (smiles).” - Yixing, comments on ChanBaek.
“Uhh guys…” a fidgeting Junmyeon enters the scene.
Baekhyun turns around, cheeks full with foods inside, at some point looking almost like a chipmunk. “What.” Incoherent voices came out from his full mouth, accidentally spitting out a grain of rice.
“Uh, never mind, I’ll just wait until all the tenants come home.”
“Okay then.” Answers Yixing from the couch.
“You know what I like the most about the sweet-Apgujeong? Obviously not the name. I’ll tell you it’s the gayest name ever. But the place is so comfortable and I could take warm baths every night, and since Junmyeon’s rich I think the house’s fee is not a big deal for him. But I never paid him late! I’m the honored tenant around here.” Kris Wu, 24 years old, Guangzhou, mainly boasting about himself and saying mean things about the house.
“I’m home.”
“Kris!” Yixing greets him from the couch, Chanyeol follows.
Kris just smiles and drops his bag onto the floor carelessly. “Hey where’s my cola, I thought I told you guys to stay out of my cola.” He speaks with his head still half disappearing into the fridge.
Chanyeol was just about to pick up a red colored can up to his lips until he realized he’s drinking what turned out to be Kris’ and he smiled guiltily. Baekhyun clucks as he gets up from the chair bringing the plate to the sink.
“It’s ok. Just drink it.” Kris sighed patiently.
“With Chanyeol, he just never listened. No matter how many times have you told him he would still not get it. But he’s a kind person, I could never bring myself to be angry at him, I’m just afraid he might apologize bitterly and silently cry in his room. I should really try getting angry at him once and ask Minseok about it later whether he cry or not. (laughs weirdly).” - Kris, secretly a mean person.
One by one the tenants are starting to show up from the back door, Kim Jongin comes silently few minutes after Kris, everyone was just following his silent because they’ll never know what mood he’s in at the moment. It’s just risky greeting him at any moment, one time he went back with a smile on his face and everybody courage up to greet him and instead the smile on his face went away almost instantly and he stormed out of the room, straight upstairs, and not going down until midnight, where he adores late night snack, and sneaking like a creep into the kitchen. Rumors going on between the tenants though that Jongin secretly likes-or liked? They’re not so sure-Kyungsoo. He once confessed but got rejected so he ended up being a bitter individual.
“But he’s been always cold and bitter from the first time he moved in though.” - Chanyeol, only telling the truth.
The very last ones to come home, together, are Luhan-another foreign tenant just like Yixing and Kris-with his new best friend but so not roommate, Kim Minseok. They’re basically like the eldest in the house, everyone respect them, or maybe more to Minseok because Luhan is kinda, well, he’s… just like that.
“Lu ge is very active, he likes to play soccer whenever he could after college, when he doesn’t have a class in a day, and he always took Minseok hyung out. It’s like, none of us are visible to him, he only has eyes on Minseok.” - Junmyeon, feeling a little bit unnoticed by Luhan senpai.
“He’s mad freak, especially when he laughs. It was like (stretching out his jaws) this. And he kept on doing that every. time. he. laughed. He’s so creepy, that hyung.” - Jongin, originally bitter.
“Luhan always talked when we eat, it’s not like I’m against it, I talk too when we were eating-all of us-but with him it’s like, a never ending talk. He talks about everything. Oh and he’s like, attached to Minseok but they don’t share a room, instead Luhan is Chanyeol’s roommate, and Minseok is sharing with Baekhyun. I don’t understand.” - Kris, so many things that he doesn’t understand, (doing interview while scratching his back and kept finger combing his hair).
“I was…disappointed…not at Lu ge, but rather at myself. (zoning out for few seconds) becauuuuse…when I first came into Korea I didn’t know anything, and I thought, that, because we’re from the same country, China, even though not from the same city, I thought that he could help me. He could though, I just didn’t know that this house (scratches head) could accept two people in one room. So I didn’t ask him to be my roommate, and then he met Chanyeol, and they’re roommates now. I’m… I didn’t tell him about this, sometimes I still feel so sad. (staring blankly at one spot).” - Yixing, poor thing.
“I don’t really know him, all I know is that he went to play soccer every afternoon. Actually, I don’t socialize much with other tenants in this house. Well, except maybe my next door tenant, Jongin.” - Kyungsoo, hinting on something.
“The only thing he could cook is ramen.” - Baekhyun, ungrateful.
Luhan drops himself onto the couch joining Yixing and ruffles his hair, his upper body is kinda soggy probably because of the overwhelming perspiration he had when he played soccer earlier, he tied the longer part of his hair into a tiny ponytail. Minseok is drinking up his fifth glass of water already, ready to take a shower with his towel on his left shoulder. Junmyeon enters the scene again, this time a little braver and more confident. He brought Kyungsoo and Jongin down from their rooms, everyone gathers understandingly on the middle and sitting in circle.
“When Junmyeon drags those two anti-social people from their respective rooms straight to downstairs, it means he has something to talk about. Something that needs permission from all of us, it could be related to new tenants, consideration of rising house’s fee in harder times of his, or maybe issues about somebody who couldn’t keep it down when it’s time to sleep. Usually it’s Chanyeol, he likes to compose songs and usually practice it late at night with his guitar. I don’t mind though my room is kinda far from his, but Luhan as his roommate, complained to me all the time.” - Kim Minseok, 24 years old, Guri, Gyeonggi-Do, one from two others who are actually at the same age, and is actually more mature.
“So guys I have some news. We’re going to have two new tenants, and they’re gonna use the vacant room beside yours, Kris, so you better greet them first, nice and friendly. And, it’s not just that, they’re two college students majoring in psychology. They have come to me this afternoon, asking permission to make a documentary film for their lecture’s project, analyzing personalities.”
“So, what, are you telling us that they’ll shoot videos of us?” there’s a disagreeing tone down there, and it’s coming from Kim Jongin who’s lying casually on the carpet.
Eight pairs of eyes are staring at him demanding, curiously, and impatiently, Junmyeon literally freezes on his spot and he couldn't just say yes without picturing the reactions that would backfire.
“…Yes. They’re gonna bring cameras, they’re going to interview you guys, they’re going to use the cupboard below the stairs to be a private room where they could interview you guys and placing a camera there so that you guys, and me, could get in there-one at a time, of course-and spill our point of views of how we see and judge each other every single day.”
“That sounds fun.” Luhan chuckles.
Junmyeon freezes again. “Are any of you guys in the same path as Luhan?”
“I think it sounds fun too, but they’ll have to know some boundaries though. They’re not going to come into our rooms, right?” Kyungsoo asks with growing pair of eyes, looking like he’s adjudicating the accused at the court.
Junmyeon bites his lower lip, “Unfortunately Kyungsoo they will go inside our rooms, they said it’s really necessary to know how one’s room looks like, it really pictures their real personality. Tidy or untidy.” He ends it with a smile as sweet as he could do.
No one is opening a discussion and they seem like they’re perfectly fine with the news, Kyungsoo got a little anxious about privacy earlier but decided slowly with himself that it’s ok. Everyone is silent for a brief moment until Minseok claps his hands. “Well, if there is none of you who disagree I’ll just take a shower now.”
“…so this means, you’re all agree to do this?”
“Yeah, I mean why not, it sounds really fun.” Kris shrugs from his spot.
“Oh and one more question guys, who left the house last this morning?” Junmyeon never really got over the unlocked front door, honestly it’s been bothering his mind since the last time Sehun and Jongdae departed.
“Me. why?” Kim Jongin once again answered with a slight disagreeing tone in his voice, Junmyeon just realized that that’s just the way he talks.
“Nothing. It’s ok.” He smiles.
“No, it’s really ok man, don’t worry. New tenants aren’t usually fun like you guys, I just thought of typical new tenants, you know? Good morning, how are you, how was your sleep, what do you think about the place, it’s all the same. New tenants are usually shy and don’t really have time to get to know us, the original generation of the sweet-Apgujeong (laughs). But you guys brought your cameras already to film us, that’s just awesome, ok? I’m telling you if your subject is about learning personalities, you have come to the right place.” - Luhan, 24 years old, Beijing, original generation of the sweet-Apgujeong.
“Heyyyy we're here!" Jongdae says excitedly when he and Sehun are standing upon the door opened by Junmyeon.
