On tinhats

It says something about SPN fandom, I think, that my first reaction to seeing the announcement on SuperWiki that Jensen and Danneel are having a baby was to check Fandom Wank to see if the tinhat drama had turned up there yet.

Of course it had.I'm just...I don't even know if amused is the right word anymore. I'm baffled, and frankly creeped out, ( Read more... )

I don't even want to know. I love Danneel too much to deal with this!

I think she's the only person involved in this that I actually follow on Twitter. She's so delightfully snarky.

It's one of the grossest aspects of fandom. At time, I find it amusing how these people are completely out of touch with reality and how they use social justice subjects to justify their misogynistic, and utterly gross opinions. But the truth is that it's not amusing. It's sick and irrational in a way that makes me want to never, ever associate with fandom.

In different words: HI BB!

I know, right?

It was funny for a while, but now I just find it offensive. I'm a woman who occasionally sleeps with other women. I do not need two guys I've never met to declare their undying love for one another in order to validate my existence, and the fact that most of the people involved in this wank don't seem to be at all involved in the LGBT community is just...it's so gross and appropriative.

(HI! It is good to see you!)

You know I don't think it's about equality or the rights of the LGBT community more than shipping is (though in the case of shipping it's a little bit more complex). I think it's wanting to have their fantasies realized or validated and it's the kind of same attitude that comes from wanting to be right I see in fandom (my ship is true and 'canon') only applied to real people. But seriously, I have never seen a less self-aware group of people. Though, the fact that they're anonymous says a lot.

Ugh, it's incredibly sad just how not surprising at all this news is. Tinhaters are enough to almost make me happy that LJ is so quiet these days; I haven't encountered one here in so long.

Plus, it seems like a pretty miserable way to be a fan. Instead of the vague happy feeling of "Aw, how great for Jensen and Danneel, and how nice that the Js and Misha will all have kids around the same age! <3", they get all that horrible rage and wank and delusion.

Oh my… what even was that? From all I've heard about that place I assumed the people who populated it were fans of the Js. But it's all just unmitigated hate. I thought I'd seen the low-point in this fandom already but once again the bar drops.

They're fans of the fantasy version of J2 that they've built up in their delusional little hive-mind, so when the actual human beings involved do things that contradict that fantasy--like get married to people other than one another and have kids--the reaction is this totally out of proportion RAEG.

I've met RPS fans who are really cool and have a good grasp of the distinction between fantasy and reality, but the tinhats give everybody in the RPS fandom (and by extension, SPN fandom) a bad name.

(also--HI THERE! Haven't seen you in a while :D)

Hey back! I replied to your comment to my recent fic over at AO3, by the way! ;-)

I trawled through some of the other threads at that place with an ever-increasing sense of disbelief. I got to the point where someone seemed to be posting to say they had been posting fake information there for ages, whereupon someone else complained bitterly about their tactics, accused them of being a troll, and appealed to whoever mods the place to report the poster's IP address to LJ. Irony can be pretty ironic at times.

That level of wank is more than sick, it's criminally disturbed, to the point that I honestly think authorities should be alerted. It's not just disgusting, it's genuinely frightening.

I agree, but sadly I don't think--at least from what I read, which certainly wasn't everything--that any of it is actually illegal. Unfortunately.
