This is quite wonderful and melancholy and bitterly sweet.

Mrs. Hudson's windows are dark. John doesn't know if she's asleep or away, and he walks softly in case of the latter.

Did you mean "former" here? Why would Watson care about noise if Mrs. Hudson was away?
