I just wanrt to clarify that I think of vector art as...er. I guess more artistic? Than simply copying a photograph for a pencil drawing or a painting. or, at least, I'm more impressed with it. Probably because I can't do it.
I AGREE. I can't use Illustrator, period. To use it to make art? FUH FUH.
Also, I'll add to your comment that copying a photograph to be incorporated into artwork can be a pretty admirable skill as well. When people just copy a photo of a model and then, say, slap a slytherin tie and deem it a drawing of Draco, I'm like "....er, no."
But of course, photo-copying is always a good practicing/reference tool. XD
also, just to make it official, only some manips I consider fanart, but only, like, if I really think about it. It is artistic, and it's made by fans, but I have a hard time categorizing it as 'fanart'. Maybe I really am an art snob.
Ahaha, and now it's suddenly occured to me - what about photo collages that are made from photos taken by the fanartist themself? Like, not stock celebrity photos but maybe photos taken of the artist's friends dressed up, or even just of scenery to create a fandom-related landscape manip?
Eeee thanks for your comment, hon! Okay, here's a question - would it be more viable if they were always termed 'graphic fanart' as opposed to just 'fanart'?
Like IRL how people tend to passionately differentiate 'art' from 'graphic art', yeah? :D :D
Indeed! Traditional 3D is included in the in the "hand-drawn/handmade traditional (2D and 3D)" category in the poll; it's definitely a form of fanart in my opinion as well!
I think anyone who takes the time to make things that are, shall we say, "outside" of the usual fanart box should get double props!
Seriously, babe. I can't make a craft to save my life, and when people can use their crafty talents to apply to fanart, it just makes our fandom world that much more brighter. :D
Taking someone else's work and cropping it and putting effects on it isn't art. The real art is the photo that was used and that's pretty much it.
So, by your definition, a writer, who takes characters and universes that were already created, and writes about them in another way - is not a writer?
I realise you have a very narrow view of what Art is. Anytime someone creates something that didn't before exist, whether they use other previously existing pieces of others works or not, it becomes their own art. Whether you personally choose to see it as such, doesn't change what it is.
your counter argument (?) is taking an extraordinarily big leap.
Not at all. It's *exactly* the same thing. Someone who writes fanfiction takes the intellectual property of another creator and manipulates it and crafts it into something new - something that comes from their own thoughts and views of previously created characters and universes. The very grey legal area of fanfiction and some of the very opinionated outbursts of *real* writers against fanfiction should be evidence enough that fanfiction is considered as fake and as unoriginal as you consider manipping.
