Are you kidding with this.

ATTN: This post is going to be public for a week or so only, since my paperwork is going in for the big move soon. But I don't want to be accused of wanking in private or anything.

Just a hint: one post, talking about the issues the poster has with a story, in the poster's OWN JOURNAL, in order to let the member's of that LJ-er's flist know about ( Read more... )

I agree with everything you've said. Nicely put.

Thank you. I rarely do stuff like this, so I'm glad it's coherent and not just key-smashing rage.

... Actually I have to disagree with you.

Having read the full discussion, this isn't someone who hasn't done the research but someone who was trying to portray something that maybe wasn't coming across. Which, if, they've reacted defensively about, but on the other hand, they've been compared to the Haiti fic of doom. Which has been dogpiled all over fandom. I'd be a bit defensive if I was worried that I was about to get that response too.

Later on in the discussion, when the author calmed down, she seemed to be to explain herself a lot better.

(if any of my sentences don't make sense, I apologise. I'm having to use a dictation program which is still learning me)

Well, leaving aside her authorial ability to portray what she wanted to, her language in response to sinuous_curve (which, like I say, was the only post at the time of randomepiphany's post) was horrifying and out of line.

And whether or not she was able to get her point across, it was offensive to me, so I don't know that there was anything wrong in sinuous_curve's post. I agree that the reference to the Haiti Fic of Doom was over the top, however.

And thank you for replying! I hadn't thought deeply enough about that comparison; thank you for bring it to my attention.

I think part of the problem might be that from one of the comment she's put in response to someone on there I believe the author may herself be trans. (I'm not sure on that, and I sure as hell don't have the right to ask, but I think is implied at one point.) While, I would agree, her first response is a bad one, I can also see how if she is writing from her own experience, a bunch of people going "is offensive to us because we don't think it is how being trans should be experienced" could, yeah, get that kneejerk.

much as I would like to claim I always keep perfect language when I lose my temper I have to admit I've had too many tantrums myself when truly furious to get righteous over it.

what the actual shit, how on earth could anyone think that's an okay thing to say about an lj post?

You know, you would think I'd stop being shocked about this stuff, but instead I keep being shocked that people react this way

yeah. :\ and i think it's like - not worse because there's not really any situation where a comparison like that is appropriate, but it's especially tactless considering one of the issues people have with that fic is its misogyny and gender issues. idk, it's just really gross.

I was appalled as well. Struggling through self injury and depression as I have, I now view the world through different eyes.

I know how I feel when someone calls me a "stupid emo" or "fucking insane" or an "attention whore". And often times, I'm not directly called it. It's people making comments about self-injurers.

I watch my words more carefully than ever because I wouldn't wish the feeling I felt on my worst enemy. But do you have to experience those kinds of comments to know not to use them? It seems like common sense that you wouldn't say those things.

This is yet another case of people saying things on the internet they wouldn't dare say in real life. And that's what's most frustrating. People can sit in front of their computers and type this shit and not have to see what damage it causes. This may sound like an After School Special but I think it's really cowardly what randomepiphany did.

Great post. If I had made this post there would've been much more profanity.

I think a lot of it comes down to people not remembering that other people are people too, if that makes sense. Like, only me and mine are really people, so if this doesn't upset me and mine, it's not upsetting! And learning that that is NOT ON seems to be really hard for a lot of people.
