I'm glad Cain and Ambrose worked out the thing about the tree. Sort of. Ambrose with his allusions!
DG being the unwitting wrench in the plan - the one who undoes things for them is painful but also seems painfully likely.
So Ambrose began picking pods off of the sugar peas with spiteful snaps
Ambrose's interlude with the flowers, those four whole paragraphs, is so beautiful. Both in the description of his gradually calming mental state and the details of the flowers and water and the vividness of the environment:
He dipped his face close to the fragrant petals to blot out the lingering twinges of soot and burnt fabric that lingered on the air, wrapped himself up in the smell of the flowers.
Stunning.
And Jeb! What a brilliant thing to have him be a Healer, and it makes perfect sense, given what he's been doing, and his skill with his hands. Brilliant surprise!

I'm not sure why, but I love how much Ambrose hates Bernhaben. <3 There's a little more to that in the next chapter.
And since you're commenting re: Bernhaben, I will share random fun thing: I do not actually know if Bernhaben is human. There's a part of me that wants him to be a robot - they've got those, and he's so absolutely protocol-driven, mechanical, that I feel like it makes sense--but then there's a part of me that, for the same reason, wants him to just be human. (The robots in the OZ seem to have more sense of feeling and whimsy than he does.)
