Yes! It was so weird! Admittedly that was some 30 years ago, but I still see some people in full pyjama gear going out to buy breakfast or a quick shopping. It boggles my mind!
I feel like it's common for some people, especially students, in the U.S. to go about their day in what resembles pajamas, if not sweatpants, but I always assumed they still wore something else to sleep in... I'm surprised people do that in China too. Maybe it's a stereotype, but I thought they care more about their image/appearance..? In any case, people in Japan and S. Korea definitely tend to dress up more or look more formal than average people in the U.S.
I had a friend once who never wore pajamas. She just wore the clothes she was going to wear the next day to sleep (or kept on her clothes from the day to sleep in?). Even jeans! It blew my mind. Not only would that be totally uncomfortable for me, but people sweat in their sleep... I could never do that.

I definitely wouldn't wear a pyjama to bed that I've worn outside. Not that I'd wear a pyjama on the street. *lol*
