Things That Made Me Happy Last Week, Week One-Hundred-Fifty-Eight

  • The one super-obvious thing is, of course, the US House's set of votes on health insurance reform last night. Even though the bills they passed (one of which, By the Beard of Zeus, still has to go back through the Senate, though there're still some good things that're happening regardless) aren't as progressive as they should've been, including a ( Read more... )

Congrats on the Health Care reform, oh brother-from-another-mother. See, up here, it's far too seductive and easy to dismiss any/all arguments AGAINST which I've been hearing for so many weeks as just "crazy Americans." Since you ARE an American you have to actively engage these arguments head-on and plough forth regardless of how insane some of them may seem. I applaud you for still having your wits about you where a lesser man would have regressed and just begun hitting people with hurled potatoes.

Also: should I ever actually get to come and visit your humble abode one day, inform your mother that I will temporarily abandon vegetarianism in the name of that corned beef on rye. Hot diggity that sounds damn good.

Yeah, sometimes I take that sort of arm's-length approach to the idiocy, from the frothing teabaggers in the streets to the "respectable" people who inspire & coddle them, who just yesterday cheered & applauded them while they were being dragged away for disrupting the floor debate on the bill, put out "tisk tisk" and "yes but" statements when they screamed slurs at elected Representatives (and worse), took up as much time as they could slamming this relatively-tame-in-some-ways bill as a communist socialist fascist Stalinist Maoist Trotskyite takeover of all that we hold dear. But of course, as attractive as it may seem, ignoring the whole mess means that they're the only voices heard...so I hope that what little I do can combine with others' efforts to make better things happen. Not that hurling potatoes isn't damned tempting sometimes ( ... )

For one, I try not to be a preachy veg, as they are the WORST. And two, I've only recently re-vegged. This is my third attempt (my longest successful stretch being 8 months). I'm pretty determined this time.

But NO veganism! I'll buy free-range eggs but DAMMIT I'm eating them gaddamned eggs!

Personally, the closest I've really gotten to the stereotypical preachy vegetarian is a smallish group that came to my college Philosophy Club to show us a PETA* propaganda video about factory farms. I was more of a douchebag back then; when they offered me a vegan cookie I said "Well, normally I don't eat anything that didn't used to have a face."

In any event, best of luck if it's what you want to do.

*True Fact: PETA is the one organization I can name off the top of my head that I hated back when I was sort of a neocon and still have a great deal of contempt for now that I'm a liberal/progressive. For very different reasons, but still, it feels notable.
