(Almost) Nobody cares about your data more than you do

The final notice has gone out: GeoCities is shutting down in nineteen daysIt feels a tad surreal to type that; coming from the generation that I do, it's difficult for me to imagine the internet without GeoCities. The Phrontistery started as a Geocities site back in 1996 - apparently it has never been archived by the Wayback Machine or whatever, and hasn't actually been on Geocities since 1999. And yes, it's true, most of the Geocities sites never grew any bigger, but even so, it's such a repository of information. Your post has reminded me to check my bookmarks and track down a couple of Geocities sites with weird/invented numerical systems and back them up just in case they don't get archived elsewhere.

Excellent! I'm not sure in what form the archive will be available in the future--whether people will host it as an active browsable directory, stick the whole lot in a torrent (or set of torrents), both or something completely different--mainly because the primary concern right now is just getting as much data slurped up before the death knell as possible.

Damn, I wish I knew where all my old Geocities stuff even WAS. I couldn't tell you the addresses if I need to.

End of an era.

I guess this is one way in which lacking the imagination to make up a second username has benefited me. Of course, when the name's already taken there're problems...

End of an era.

Exactly. What's next, Angelfire?
