All downhill from here

As I've certainly mentioned in the past, one of the things I find hardest about riding is going downhill. I attribute this to the fact that long before I started doing anything around horses I used to do a lot of mountain biking and I got very accustomed to having some handlebars in front of me the whole time. In the interests of health and safety I think it is required that you SUPERGLUE YOUR TROUSERS TO THE SADDLE when riding down a steep hill.

particularly as I have been too afraid to ride it for the last couple of years so it had grown steeper and more scary in my emotional geography

Kind of amazing how that works. My first event was at a place with a hill that people kept warning me about. How big it was, how steep, etc. By the time I actually got there, I was picturing this total Man From Snowy River affair. The real hill was actually a relief; there was no _way_ it could ever have been as terrifying as what I was imagining.

The trick, it seems, is to find a convenient bank to work on, so you can start really small and build up...
