Disclaimer: I don’t own Glee. Finn and Rachel belong to Ryan Murphy.
Summary: Life is full of firsts for Finn and Rachel. The random ones are the most fun.
A/N: My prompt was “first time as a couple…doing anything,” so I wrote about some firsts for Finn and Rachel. Just not your conventional firsts ;)

“There’s a first time for everything, Finn,” she always says to him.

Cupcakes

Finn remembers the day Rachel came storming into Glee with her tray of “I’m Sorry” cookies, regretfully informing them that not even the sugary treats could convince Mr. Schuester to attend Glee rehearsal that day. And Finn remembers being really, really annoyed, but not annoyed enough to not want to snatch the cookie tray out of Rachel’s hand and eat those cookies. They just looked so delicious. He refrained though, because he was supposed to be angry.

And then, one day at lunch, Rachel gave him half of a peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie she had brought for dessert, and Finn thought that he was going to have to summon the mailman, just from eating a damn cookie. Rachel Berry sure knew how to bake.

So when he calls her on a Saturday afternoon, about a month after they start dating, to see what she’s up to, he doesn’t hesitate to accept her invitation to come over when she tells him she’s getting ready to make cupcakes (he thinks that taste-testing might be his calling in life).

When he gets to her house, he’s amazed to see her counter covered in containers of flour and sugar and a million tubes of icing. There are eggs and milk and little jars of things he doesn’t recognize, but Rachel obviously knows what she’s doing as she pulls out mixing bowls and baking tins.

She has on this adorable pink apron that’s got a big gold star right on the front, and he thinks she just needs one of those big hats that looks kind of like a muffin and she could be a professional.

“Wow, Rach, this is a lot of stuff for cupcakes, “ Finn says, laughing as he looks through the rainbow of icing colors.

“Well, this is the first time we’ve ever baked together, so it’s special. These are love cupcakes.”

Finn just frowns a little and tries not to look weirded out when Rachel’s straight face cracks and she starts laughing.

“I’m just kidding!” she says as she takes in his appearance and surprised face. “Even I wouldn’t be serious about ‘love’ cupcakes. You should have seen your face.” He starts to laugh too, and she smiles up at him. “Plus, I would have made these anyway, with or without you.” He frowns a little again, so she quickly adds to her statement. “But I prefer having you here to make them with me.”

---

Two hours later, Rachel’s pulling the last pan of cupcakes out of the oven, and Finn has already managed to get frosting all over himself.

She takes in his appearance as she carefully sets the fresh cupcakes on the baking rack to cool and laughs when she sees the smudges of icing all over Finn’s face and hands.

“Seriously, Finn, how did you manage that?” she asks as she gestures to his hands and face, laughing hysterically.

“Frosting cupcakes is hard, okay Rach? The icing won’t stop coming out of these tubes!”

She continues to laugh as she watches him try to write something illegible on top of one of the cupcakes in blue icing, but he gives up when he realizes that his letters just look like blobs and are causing Rachel to laugh even harder.

“You know what,” he starts, standing up with a devilish grin on his face and beginning to walk towards her, “come here!”

“No!” she squeaks as she realizes what he’s up to, trying to turn and run out of the kitchen. He’s too fast though, and before she knows it, he’s got her around the waste, spinning her around in his arms so that she’s facing him.

“Ahhh! Finn, let me go!” she squeals as he holds her close, moving a finger covered in red frosting closer and closer to her face.

“Nope,” he says as he dabs his finger on both cheeks, leaving little bits of frosting there, “tell me I did a good job baking.” He smears another blob of frosting across her forehead.

“Fine!” she cries, giggling, “you did good!”

“Just good?” he asks as he places a dab on her nose.

“You did wonderful for it being your first time trying to keep up with my impressive baking skills,” she says as he moves his finger to her lips and places the last bit of frosting there.

“That’s what I like to hear,” he replies as he leans into her, effectively removing the frosting from her lips with his own.

Pumpkins

“This is gross.”

Finn rolls his eyes and laughs as he watches Rachel attempt to scoop out the insides of her pumpkin without actually touching the pumpkin or its contents. She has a disgusted look on her face that Finn has to admit makes her look way more adorable than grossed out.

“Hey, you’re the one who insists on celebrating all these holidays because they’re our ‘first holidays,’” Finn says, grinning at her as she lets a pile of the pumpkin’s insides fall on top of the newspaper scattered over her kitchen table.

“Well, when I said we should do something since this is our first Halloween as a couple, I meant like, dressing in cute matching costumes or something, not carving pumpkins,” she replies, still frowning at the orange goo she’s scooping out of her pumpkin.

“Okay, first,” Finn says, laughing again, “we are NOT dressing in matching costumes, like, ever, and two, didn’t you ever do this as a child?”

“Oh, my fathers and I carve pumpkins every year.”

Finn just looks at her, surprised. “Then why are you complaining if you do this every year?!”

“Because I just draw the face on the front and let them take care of the disgusting stuff,” she replies, still not looking up at him as she pays close attention to her work.

“Rachel, that is not carving! You have to get in there and do it yourself!” Finn says, setting down his large spoon and moving over to her. “Here,” he says as he gently takes her right arm in his hand and guides her actions, helping her really get to the pumpkin guts.

“Eww!” she shrieks as her arm accidentally touches the side of the pumpkin’s opening along the top. “My arm touched it!”

“Stop being such a baby,” he laughs, pushing her hand farther down inside.

“Oh my God Finn! Stop! Ew!”

“Such a baby,” he teases, sticking his tongue out at her.

“All right, fine!” she cries. “I’ll show you!” With that, she takes her hand that’s not inside the pumpkin and grabs a pile of the orange pumpkin guts without a second thought, moving quickly and shoving the slimy glob down the front of his shirt. He jumps back instantly, his arms out and mouth hanging open wide as he looks down at the front of his shirt and gasps.

“You…oh my God Rachel…” he looks up at her then, shaking his head, “you are so going to get it!” He moves back towards the table but Rachel quickly dashes towards the other side of the kitchen, holding her arms out in front of her.

“No! Stay away from me Finn! Don’t you even think about it!” she yells as she sees him grab a handful of the pumpkin guts and bring his arm back by his head. “I’m not joking Finn! If you get that disgusting pumpkin all over my kitchen, my dads will-“

She doesn’t finish her sentence because at that moment, the glob of pumpkin that Finn had in his hands hits her in the shoulder. She gasps, her eyes going wide and her mouth falling open.

“I’m going to kill you!” she screams, running towards him. She’s tiny but aggressive, he knows, and he knows she will literally tackle him to the ground if he’s not careful. He quickly reaches behind him to grab more of the slimy pumpkin and she leaps towards him. Before she can grab him, he’s got the pumpkin way to close to her face for comfort, so she moves around him, grabbing her own handful of pumpkin from the table and chucking it at his face. No mercy.

---

Half an hour later, Rachel’s fathers return from grocery shopping to find Rachel and Finn both lying on the kitchen floor, laughing hysterically, pumpkin insides scattered all around them.

They look quickly at each other before turning their attention to the teens.

“Do we even want to know what happened?” Dad number one, Leroy, asks.

Rachel, laughing so hard she has tears in her eyes, sits up a little and shakes her head, attempting to get out a “no,” but failing.

“We’re just going to go upstairs now,” Dad number two, Hiram, says, looking directly at Finn and Rachel. “Have this kitchen cleaned up by the time we come back.”

When her dads are gone and their laughing has calmed down, they both turn their heads to look at each other as they lay sprawled out.

“You have pumpkin in your hair,” Finn says, smiling.

“You have pumpkin in your hair!” Rachel laughs.

“It looks good on you,” he says, still smirking.

“You’re so getting it later.”

“I’m so not afraid.”

He winks and she smacks him.

He still laughs.

Bookstore

“Is it weird that I’m really excited?” Finn asks as he grabs her hand in his as they walk through the entrance to the Barnes and Noble. It’s times like these that Rachel almost wishes they were back in Lima. She wouldn’t be dealing with a million and one people circulating in and out of the bookstore on a Wednesday afternoon if they were in Ohio.

“I don’t think so,” Rachel replies, squeezing his hand a little as they thread through the people browsing books at the front of the store. “We’ve never been here together.”

“Well,” Finn says, scanning the labels on the bookshelf for the section they’re looking for, “I think the excitement might have to do with the reason we’re here. Which I guess is a first as well.”

The smile on her face seems to grow by a mile as she lets him lead her to the area they’ve been looking for. She’s thankful that he’s so tall and can see the tops of the shelves easily.

“I don’t even know where to start,” she says when they get to the section they need. They both just stand there, eyes wide as they scan title after title. Who knew there could be so many books on one subject?

“Maybe we should have looked this up beforehand,” he remarks.

“Maybe,” she says, nodding. “Oh well, let’s just start looking. We’ve got all afternoon.”

---

Two hours later, they’ve set up a camp of sorts on the floor of the store, books spread out all around them.

“Oh, we definitely need to get this one, “ Finn says, handing her the book so she can put it in their “definitely buying” pile. “It’s all about what you should and shouldn’t eat.”

“Oh, nice,” she says as she sets the book down on top of the large pile and returns her attention to the one in her lap. “I like this one-it’s a week by week guide.”

“Awesome,” he says as he grabs a smaller one off the shelf in front of him. “This one is cool-it’s small so you can put it in your purse, and it lists all the things you should or shouldn’t do.”

“Perfect,” she replies, taking the book from him and flipping through it before placing it on the pile.

“Do you really think we’re going to have time to read all of these?” he asks when they’re finished and he’s gathering all the books in his arms (she insists that she can help him, but he’s adamant that he carry them all, even if it’s only been two months).

“Well, we have a lot of time ahead of us,” she responds, pulling her purse over her shoulder.

Right before they’re about to leave the section and head towards the checkout, a big striped book on the end catches both their eyes, and they stop as Rachel picks it up and opens to the middle, flipping through a few pages.

“I didn’t even think about getting a book like this,” she says as she thumbs through the pages, the big black words popping out to her.

“Me neither,” Finn replies, smiling. “I mean, this is all so new, I didn’t even think about…names.”

“Kind of makes him or her a little more real, huh?” Rachel asks, turning to return his smile.

“Yeah,” he says slowly, nodding and taking the book from her. “The Complete Book of Baby Names,” he reads, scanning over the cover. “I never thought about picking out a name from a book.”

“Me neither,” Rachel says, letting her hand fall down to her stomach subconsciously. It’s only been two months, but she can already feel something there, even if it is just a flutter of excitement. “But then again, it could give us some good suggestions.”

Finn nods again, thoughtfully. “It never hurts to look,” he says finally, setting the book on top of the others in his arms.

“Well, at least we’ve got seven more months to decide.”

Nail polish

Finn watches with amusement as Rachel rests her hand on her ever-growing belly, using it as a table of sorts. He thinks it’s hilarious, watching as she meticulously paints her fingernails a deep red. She’s laying down along the couch, eight months pregnant and never more beautiful, in his opinion.

“Hey Finn,” she calls to him in the kitchen, where he’s currently making her toast. With peanut butter and fruit loops on top. He doesn’t question the weird cravings anymore.

“Yeah babe?” he replies as he walks into the living room, gently lifting her legs up and placing them down on his lap as he sits down beside her.

“Can you do me a favor?” she asks, finishing her painting and trading him the nail polish for the toast.

“Anything,” he answers, smiling as he sets the nail polish down and gently rubs her feet.

“Mmm, that feels good,” she murmurs, smiling, before she looks back at him and grins. “Can you paint my toenails please?”

Finn’s eyes go wide and he looks at her like she’s crazy. “Seriously? Why do you need your toenails painted?”

“Because they need to match my fingernails, silly.”

Finn continues to look at her like she’s crazy. “Rach, it’s February. We live in New York. Who in the world is going to see your toenails?”

“Um, you.”

He rolls his eyes. “Because I care about whether your toenails match your fingernails.”

“Please Finn?”

He knows she’s completely serious. She really wants him to paint her toenails.

“Rachel, I’ve never painted nails before. This is going to suck.”

She shrugs, smiling. “There’s a first time for everything, Finn.”

He returns her smile. She always says that. A first time for everything. Like when they totally took off for a weekend during their senior year without telling their parents, and he told her how surprised he was that she would do something like that. She had just shrugged, using her favorite phrase. “There’s a first time for everything, Finn.”

Or the time that got them to be where they are right now. When she smiled and kissed him in bed one night, telling him that she wanted a baby. When his eyes got wide and he didn’t know what to say and she totally read his mind. “It makes me nervous too, but there’s a first time for everything. We’ll figure it out together.”

She breaks his thoughts by speaking again. “Plus, maybe one day she’ll ask you to paint her nails,” Rachel says, rubbing her hand over her belly. “Think of this as practice.”

Finn smiles, thinking about their little girl, still growing in Rachel’s belly. He knows he’d do anything for her. Anything for the both of them.

He grabs the nail polish and opens it, laughing. “Now, no complaining if I get this on your actual toes.”

---

Six and a half years later, when he’s painting his daughter’s fingers “Pretty Princess Pink” so they’ll “look pretty when they go to see Mommy’s show,” he remembers Rachel and her toenails.

“Daddy, how’d you get so good at this?” she asks, giggling as she watches his big hands hold the tiny brush.

“Mommy made me practice a lot.”

He remembers that first time like it was yesterday.
