Brain Damaged Blaine anonymous April 13 2011, 19:22:02 UTC
In a hate crime, Blaine is badly injured and suffers from brain damage. When he finally comes to he finds that he can't understand anything that is being said to him.

Blaine has Wernicke's Aphasia. Part of his brain that makes sense of language was damaged. Things that are spoken to him make no sense and when he tries to speak, he leaves out words, replaces words, or makes them up so that they are not understandable. He's confused and upset, not able to speak with anyone.

Kurt stays by his side the entire time, continuing to talk to him although nothing makes any sense. One day, Kurt sings to him and to both of their surprise Blaine can understand. The part of the brain that helps with music is separate from the language center.

They continue to communicate through music throughout Blaine's recovery.

Okay, I know I have like a thousand stories going right now but this hit all my buttons. I'm a neurobiology major with a psychology minor focusing on brain injuries, I will use all my inner nerd for this :)

Also, I loved The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat!!!! Have you ever read Phantoms in the Brain? That one is amazing!!!

Oh, see, you're MADE to take this prompt!! It's gonna be awesome. I haven't read Phantoms, but I don't know why not; I loved The Man a TON. I still think about it every time a politician gives a speech!

Whoa, Oliver Sacks is amazing - I read that one, The Island of the Colorblind (total congenital color blindness inherited by almost everyone in a certain island society by Guam disease) and A Leg to Stand On (about his own experience of losing the awareness of one of his legs after an accident). Those two are real recommendations - The Island if you're talking about a fascinating case and A Leg for the generally poignant and amusing way he describes his own case and his frustration with finding himself in the role of patient for once.

You totally inspired me to go pick up one of his other books now because you reminded me of The Man.

Sorry for the OT comment, btw.
