Reaping the Benefits [Day 12]

Jan 15, 2010 20:10

After several hours, the effects of the gas begins to dissipate as the prison’s system stops pumping the chemical into the air, though all the rooms (first and second floor showers, the infirmary, and the gym) remain open. Prisoners who are overcoming the urges induced by the gas may begin to feel symptoms such as lethargy, pronounced muscle ache ( Read more... )

Yayoi immediately let go of the girl's hair. What had she been thinking? The robot voice was talking, and she just knew that this was the warden's fault. "I'm sorry!" she yelled. "I don't think your hair is stupid!" Tears began leaking from her eyes.

Didi couldn't even remember what they were fighting about. It must have been something dumb. She didn't like fighting. Stupid hormones. "And I don't think there's anything wrong with your glasses, I'm so sorry."

Yayoi flung her arms around the girl in confusion and misery. "I'm sorry! Did I hurt you?" Yayoi hoped she hadn't. She wasn't great at fighting.

Now this was more Didi's thing. She knew all about hugs! She was actually good at hugs! "I'm fine." Okay, so the hair pulling had hurt a bit at the time, but it was over now. "Are you okay?"

Yayoi thought about that for a second. "I think so! Sometimes this happens, the warden makes us be mean. I don't like it at all." And usually everyone was so nice, too.

Didi didn't like being forced to be mean. She'd started doing this mortal thing to make sure she wasn't being mean by accident any more. "It's way more fun to be nice than it is to be mean. Someone should explain that to him."

Yayoi stepped back. "I don't know, I think that might go against his fundamental principles, considering this whole evil death prison, thing. But for the most part, the people here are really nice. So whatever he's trying to do isn't working very well."

"I've met so many great people here. And it must make sense to him, somehow. He can't have just woken up and said 'I think I'm going to be a jerk today!' People don't work like that."

The fact that this wasn't how Didi had planned to spend her day had been pushed aside for the fact that her day should have been over by now. And if there was ever someone who needed figuring out, it was the Warden.

Yayoi nodded. "That's true, but I think he's been a jerk for so long that it feels like that to him sometimes. I'm Yayoi, by the way. We didn't really get in proper introductions before."

"I think... he might think he's the only real thing there is, so the rest of us don't count."

They really hadn't gotten introductions at all. Greetings about how stupid the other looked didn't tend to lead to it. "I'm Didi. Wish we could have skipped the fighting."

"Yeah," Yayoi agreed, "That wasn't my favourite part. I haven't seen you around at dinner, have you been here very long?" Not having seen her didn't necessarily mean she was new, but Yayoi was curious.

"A little more than a day. It's strange." Mostly because she wasn't supposed to be alive any more. She liked it, other than the hormones, but she knew it couldn't be good. The Warden was getting around the rules of the universe and that wasn't how the universe was supposed to work.

"Oh, wow," Yayoi replied, "You are pretty new then! For an inescapable prison, people seem to be coming and going all the time! It's kind of funny." Didi thought the prison was strange now, just wait until she had been here a few days!

"A lot of things seem to happen here that shouldn't." Didi wondered how much of it she could really explain.

Yayoi lowered her voice. "Did you know that there are aliens here? One of them said 'take me to your leader' and everything!"

"Aliens?" Didi had met people from lots of different planets, but that didn't make the prospect of meeting more any less exciting. And actually saying 'take me to your leader'? They must have a great sense of humour. "Did any of them say where they were from?"
