Clean Up Time (Day 8)

May 02, 2009 23:15

The Warden's voice sounded on the speakers, his voice seemingly everywhere.

You will all be teleported to the Recreation Area.

The prisoners are then teleported to the Recreation area. The door leading back to the main prison seals shut and locked tightly. As usual, the recreation area is half grass, the other half is cement.

Yayoi landed on the soft grass mid-panic. It took her a moment to register what had happened. This had to be the first time she was glad to have teleported! Yayoi hoped that this meant that Nana had teleported too. Maybe Nana had teleported before her, since Yayoi hadn't seen her in the tiny cell they shared. Of course, there had also been a lot of smoke at that point ...

Yayoi still wasn't that hungry, but knew she should eat something before she got faint. She grabbed a bagel off the breakfast table and went to sit on the swings and try to relax.

Dr Horrible landed on the grass, spared any further moral dilemmas about firefighting. His first priority was a glass of water. He mustn't take any chances with his voice, after all. He picked up a piece of fruit almost as an afterthought. Then he scanned the crowd looking for a familiar (non-Captain Hammer) face.

Spotting the girl he'd met when he first arrived, he walked over to the swings. "Hi... Yayoi, right?"

Yayoi looked up from her bagel and smiled.

"Hi. Doctor . . . Horrible?"

That was such a strange name.

Dr Horrible nodded. "That's me."

All that work and there were still people who didn't know his name.

Maybe he would sit and swing with her. That would be exciting.

"Did you see the fire this morning?"

The swings looked like they might be a decent way to pass the time. Once he finished his drink though. Otherwise it would just end in a mess.

"I did. I've seen some pretty impressive fires, but that was definitely a pretty thorough one."

Yayoi pushed herself back on the swing.

"I don't know how the warden does it. I woke up and Nana was gone and there was burning bedding everywhere."

Dr Horrible finished his water and took a seat on the next swing. "I would love to get a look at what he uses to teleport us around like that. It must be an amazing bit of technology."

He was going to swing with her. Yayoi grinned.

"I know, you can't even see any evidence of half the devices they're using. But maybe it;s some kind of alien technology we can't even understand. It could even be that the prison itself is the warden! A sentient prison! It would be pretty scary!"

"Scary... but also spectacular. Can you imagine? An entire intelligent building. The computing resources it could make use of! Then of course all the invisible technology would be possible." It seemed unlikely. But when he got out, he wanted to try to build one.

"It could be a creature. Some kind of alien creature that eats souls or something! Then it wouldn't even have computing technology. It would explain why most of us haven't committed a crime and yet we're dragged out here with no trial or anything."

Well that was getting a bit fanciful. "Eats souls? How would that play in with the teleporting?

"I think the Warden probably fancies himself some sort of hero."

Yayoi kicked her feet to start swinging in earnest.

"A hero? But he must know that some of these people are innocent. I mean, the crime I'm accused of has already been dealt with at home."

"I'm not sure he cares. It probably makes him feel important.

"How did you find out what you're accused of? I don't know why the Warden thinks I should be here." Mind you, there were plenty of crimes to choose from. You didn't graduate from Evil University by being a law abiding citizen. It was specified in the code of conduct.

"There's some kind of local network on the laptops in the cells. It links to this blog sort of thing for everyone - you probably already have a screen name on there, the warden is like that - and it also links to a list of cell assignments and your crimes and all that kind of stuff."
