I view maturity as the ability to be real with yourself and others about your thoughts, feelings and views, to own them as your own, and to make good on your insights while thriving in this mode of living. Good judgment helps.
Blathering on and on about your unsupported pet hunches is not maturity. Abdicating the use of reason is not maturity. ( Read more... )

that's a pretty good definition!

i tend to view maturity as the ability to learn from old mistakes and read oneself well enough not to repeat them. This as opposed to experience, which just means you've made enough mistakes to remember them. someone mature but inexperienced will make all sorts of mistakes, but will notice them, own up to them and work hard not to repeat them. someone experienced but immature will know exactly what they've done in the past, but as often as not will fail to notice or accept that they are mistakes, and do the same exact thing all over again.

that's interesting. i've never compared maturity and experience, though they're commonly associated with the passage of time. i agree they aren't the same.
