Using Photoshop CS2, first part of the tutorial is translatable though. Only the last part is Selective Coloring, but it's very little.

Please, do not use this tutorial to make ALL your icons, because same looking icons? BORING. That's simply a guide to help you find your own style and coloring, and how I brighten my Supernatural caps.

STEP 1
Take your cropped image. Mine is a pretty one of Dean in Supernatural.

Go to Image -- Adjustements -- Variations, then put your arrow in the middle, and click three times on 'Lighter'. You should have something like this:

STEP 2
Now duplicate your base layer and set it to Screen. It now should look a little bit brighter than at the beginning. That's how I usually brighten the very dark and colorless SPN caps. :P

STEP 3
Now it's time to add a little color to the icon. Go to Layer -- New Adjustement Layer -- Hue/Saturation. Put the Saturation arrow to +27. You should have something like that:

STEP 4
This is already the last step! Okay, so now we're going to make a Selective Color layer, because Supernatural caps really lack of redness in them. So go to Layer -- New Adjustement Layer -- Selective Color. Put the following settings:
REDS
C : -100
M : +12
Y : -22
YELLOWS
C : -22
Y : -11
B : +12
NEUTRALS
C : +9
M : +1
Y : +14
Click OK
Your icon now should look like that:

The coloring is now done. Simple, heh? It looks pretty, without being oversaturated with Selective Color layers!

If you want, you can add a black brush at the bottom. I did that and my final result was:

Your icon is finished! I'd love to see your results :P
