HELP! Is there anybody out there who has an idea about flutes? Especially piccolos, but any other kind of small flute would be fine too. I'm currently flirting with the idea of learning to play the flute but I don't know much about this group of instruments, so any kind of inside information is welcome.Yesterday I got a postcard and I'm SO happy!

I tried to learn flute when I was 10. I hated it because I'd run out of breath easily and feel faint orz I also had difficulty with the finger configuration (i've always had weak hands). However, I was a useless child who hated everything ^^;; I think as long as you remember to pause and breath every once in a while, you should have fun XD; I say, go for it! Now that I'm an adult, I wish that I had kept with it and could play an instrument.

By flute, do you mean a recorder or a concert flute? I learnt to play the recorder when I was in kindergarten but by now I have forgotten all about it. OTL Now I wonder if I could learn to play a concert flute but what if I forget it just as quickly... >_< Or maybe I should re-learn playing the recorder first?

I meant a real concert flute ^^;; Though, I was taught recorder a few years before that, it didn't really help me ^^; (it's okay, I forgot everything I learned about recorder too lol)

The only instrument I could never get a sound out, is the flute. I've played the clarinet for 13/14 years (and was going to major in it). I've had my share of instruments too ranging from clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, piano, etc. I never liked the flute, but it is a harder instrument to learn. Only good thing about it, it's one of the few woodwinds that don't use a reed.

By flute I guess you mean a recorder (because you said woodwinds). (Sorry, I'm never sure if a "flute" is a recorder or a transverse flute, because my dictionary mentions both OTL)
It's interesting that you played the trumpet too! Don't you need much more breath for the trumpet than for the flute?

You know many instruments, do you happen to have any experience with piccolos? Is it much different from a normal flute?

I found the flute to be harder actually. When I played the trumpet, I actually had braces. It was a little difficult to do such when I did; but I enjoyed it (plus the school loaned it to me for marching band). From my understanding piccolos are alot harder. They're smaller, fingers are cramped together. If your dead set on learning it; I would recommend learning the flute first.

One instrument I've always wanted to learn is the bagpipes; but I never got a chance to play the oboe which has the same fingerings as the bag pipes ^^;

I can’t believe the library where treats bunch of important paper stuffs is ruin & has terrible dripping water problem!! (I love reading, so books are quite important for my life!) I hope they fix their buildings soon… ><;;

And, good luck for your friend (and her exam)!

Apparently this was the first time it was raining inside the history/theology/philosophy library (the university has different libraries for the different subjects and the h/t/p library is my homestead).

I'm also worried about the books! Not only because I need them for studying, but also because I love books in general and I think they should be treated with respect. So I also hope that something will be done about the buildings. T_T
