The Islamophobia is really getting scary right now. If the ADL really wants to draw distinction between their position & those of bigots, they need to do more to get out in front on this & stand up to the Tea Party Groups & the ACLJ on bigoted-rhetoric & attempts to legally bar the building of Mosques & Islamic Community Centers across the country ( Read more... )

the ADL, as in many things, are being retarded. it's no wonder someone leaked their asinine position to the press.

I'm willing to extend them the benefit of the doubt - based on their history standing up for Muslim rights in the US - that they really do mean "this particular location does no one any good, though we're sure it was chosen with the best intentions, and while it's within the group's rights, they would be best served by considering another location" But that being the case they REALLY need to take a lead against the real Islamophobia both on that specific issue, and with regard to Mosques & Community Centers in cities & towns across the country now being protested.

they bowed to pressure, plain and simple. their problem is that abe foxman's trying to be AIPAC or AJC instead of actually following the mission statement and supporting religious freedom. and they've stumbled into the publicity they've been craving for years - unfortunately it's the exact wrong kind of publicity the ADL needs so that people will take them seriously as a civil rights org.

There's another major difference between those cases: One is specifically choosing a site near Auschwitz in the largely open space region. The other is Lower-fucking-Manhatten! There are already 2 mosques in the immediate area, as well as other houses of worship, shopping centers, strip clubs, and an off track betting site! It's not exactly hallowed ground.

The problem is the press created this "Ground Zero Mosque" narrative creating the impression of the community center being built on the site of the World Trade Center itself.
