Ugh.

It's amazing the things that eat away at you, even though they're utterly ridiculous.

Today is "Wear it pink day" at school, to raise money for a breast cancer charity in the UK.  Lucas really didn't want to wear anything pink (on account of him being a boy, y'see) but begrudgingly put on a pair of pink socks and his uniform.  He was okay with ( Read more... )

Stuff like that is always so hard to call. In one school, you'd get your situation, where the boys are all breaking the pink taboo with no problems, and then at another school he might get crucified by the other kids for overdoing it. Also, boys get WAY more crap for violating gender norms than girls (which irritates me to no end, but that's another issue altogether).

You could always spray his hair pink with temp dye next year - big statement without him actually having to wear the dreaded girl clothes. ;)

You should have seen his face when I suggested pink spray in his hair!! I've never seen him look so horrified.

He's compromised on a pink Stetson for next year as "that isn't clothes."

At the summer camp Jake goes to they always have a few days when they are divided into teams and each team is named after a color, and they are encouraged to wear that color for those days. Two years ago he was on a pink team, and I thought he would be much more against wearing anything pink, but it was actually more the fact that I don't wear pink myself and the only thing I had at home that was pink was socks. So he wore them :).

So good to see you, Kasia!!

I think older boys are better with pink (or more susceptible to peer pressure, perhaps). The Y6 boys were bedecked with pink feather boas, sparkly hats, candy-striped t-shirts etc etc.

It's weird... I've never made a big deal out of colours, or even toys, but he's ended up falling in with gender stereotypes regardless.
