I'm of the same mind--why go to all the trouble if I can buy it at the store? :) Even though I know all the benefits of home grown things. (And where we live, I don't have conditions to grow anything anyway.)
My parents had a little vegetable and flower garden, with a few fruit trees, right outside the city, and from spring to fall they would spend almost every weekend there. I wasn't very enthusiastic about helping them out, but I never minded eating fresh strawberries or peaches straight from the tree *g*.
I think it's the sheer romance of home-grown veg that has hooked me in.
Being able to walk just a few steps from the kitchen door and cut herbs has been wonderful and it'll only get better if I can pull up a few carrots or cut some spinach.
I don't plan to spend every weekend gardening, though!!!
Tomatoes are one of the few things that I haven't contemplated growing. I don't have a greenhouse so I'd have to buy in plants. Dunno if it'd be worth it.
I do definitely like the idea of growing things that you can't buy, though!

Yeah, buying your veggies from the market is nice and handy, but there's nothing like going out to your own garden and picking it yourself!
