"Raven, open up," she called, knocking again. "C'mon, we don't have much time!"

Someone was being sneaky, shhh!

It wasn't upon a midnight dreary, and Raven wasn't exactly pondering weak and weary over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, but she'd been expecting Karla, only this, and nothing more.

"Come in, Karla," Raven said, opening up her closet. "Will I need a coat? What is it like in Kaeleer now?"

"A coat would be good," Karla said with a nod. "Or your cloak, actually. It's winter there, too, and it can get pretty chilly. But that just gives us an excuse to have lunch at the tavern and drink lots of mulled cider!"

...It was possible that Karla had brazenly lied to Raven about their plans for today.

"My cloak should keep me warm enough then," Raven decided, pulling it over her shoulders.

She paused and gave Karla a curious look. "Is everything all right? Are you shielding from me?" She had the strange sensation that Karla was hiding something from her. It wasn't an easy thing to surprise an empath, after all.

[THAT'S RIGHT. I JUST MODDED YOU SHIELDING. DEAL WITH IT.]

[OMG. I AM SHOCKED AND APPALLED. DO YOU HEAR ME? SHOCKED AND APPALLED.]

Damn empaths and their stupid abilities grumble grumble gumble. Raven was probably able to pick up the concern and chagrin Karla felt before she strengthened her shields a bit more. "I am," she admitted, bowing her head while her thoughts raced furiously. It wasn't like she could deny the shield, after all. "I'm a little nervous about going home. I haven't been back since Agio. But I didn't want to ruin your excitement."

Would that work?
