I'm still not sure how this happened, but while visiting chefmongoose the other weekend, he somehow talked film2edit into making some artwork of me as a Brony:
when I visited the Nautilus with some friends cellphones were just becoming comercially viable for the (well off) general public. Post brick, but they were still unusual. it was very rare to see them. So we come up from below decks and the friend gets a call on cellphone. OMG, actual reception! and starts jabbering into the cellphone in Russian. The guy on duty was giving him quite the look over it. he eventually decided he was just a tourist.
(it was his mom on the phone, so I suspect the tone made it fairly clear it was Mom)
The funny thing is, apparently a number of us started off likewise, i.e. "Eh, this is okay, but I don't see what the fuss is all about."
And then something happens around the 5th or 10th episode and next thing you know, at the next convention you attend the ponies come up ALL THE TIME to wild audience acclaim. :) I can't complain about that! I found it very... salutary to become involved with something so charming and earnest and un-snarky. It's a bit like the early days of TLK-L, in a way, except in a considerably bigger scope. Ponies are EVERYWHERE, and life is good.

It was so cute and adorable that the "victim" actually liked the badge, had it inked and laminated, and wore it at the last con.
When pony fans say "We will love and tolerate the shit out of you!" to the haters, we mean it.
*hugs!*
