I think I'm both, but not very serious about either. I'm a very weird feminist. I turned down a 'minority & merit-based' undergrad scholarship offered by MIT because I thought it was insulting. I keep rooting for a female equivalent to Hooter's. The more I learn about biology and pych/neuro (at least in my FacDev coursework)the more I think, well damn, men and women are fundamentally different, and that's OK. I guess it's not even so much femanism as I think everyone should be able to do whatever the hell they want as long as it doesn't hurt anybody and that people have the right to be judged by their own merits and not gender/race/soda preference.
How about Speed-O's. The restauraunt where men (who happen to be gorgeous and clad in speedos) serve Onion rings and o-shaped fries, speedily. Perhaps on rollerblades? This requires further thought.
I'm also a very weird feminist. I don't like people looking at me and thinking that I can't do something, just because I'm a female.
But in the same token, there are very big differences in the genders. Women have a lower center of gravity and a higher pain threshhold. Men tend to have more muscle mass. That does make certain things more difficult for different genders. For example, women are better pilots.
I think my frustrations in the gender equality issue, stem mostly from being a female in a predominantly male industry (IT).
As for the other part, I do believe in respecting the earth and all living things. I just don't go to such extremes as some people.
I do believe that feminism began as the novel idea that women were people, too. After certain freedoms were won, people began splitting off into weird little factions, much like you can see the Republican party doing now or the civil rights movement did in the 70's. It happens when a single-minded goal is won and people veer off to pursue their own interests. There are some odd beliefs floating around the feminism movement right now but not every feminist needs to be a hairy-legged granola-eating man hater. However, every woman does need to feel safe and be allowed to pursue her dreams without her gender holding her back. Ugly things like female genital mutilation, honor killings, forced marriages, and rape happen because women are not equal to men in the eyes of society

I like granola too.devilsoatmealMay 18 2006, 09:35:51 UTC
I've been mixing granola with vanilla yogurt every morning for breakfast.. it's pretty good! I hate trees though. Too much pollen, they kill my sinuses. Oh yeah, women's rights.. all for 'em. Hi, Gina!
