On Swedish Children's Classics, or, They Do Things Differently Here

Feb 27, 2010 14:32

We watched Bröderna Lejonhjärta (The Brothers Lionheart) yesterday. It's from an Astrid Lindgren book of the same name. It's a children's classic and, so Val says, one of those things everyone knows about.

What is it about? Well, basically, children dying in horrible ways. ( The long version... )

oh my god, astrid lindgren, films

...wow.

That actually sounds like some of the older fairy tales, where everyone dies in horrific ways.

Kinda! Possibly it's not as horrible as most of those. *cracks up* Scandinavia doesn't seem big on stories where everything is happy and bright though. XDDD

Unni, anything can make me cry. XD But yeah, I know. I can see how it's a pretty great story to kids. It's adults who get freaked out. It made me so sad. And really! What about their poor mum!

This is Piipa, just too damn tired to log in appropriate account. Anyway, I think I read this one as well when I was a kid. At least I've seen some version of it on film. I liked it! I'd rec one Lingren if I'd remember its name... It's about this little girl who moves to live in a forest because her dad is warring with her best friend's dad. It's called Ronja, someone'sdotter in Swedish... (Ah, wiki tells me it's called Ronja Rövardotter) It was my favorite as a kid. They've made a movie of it as well.

Ahh, I think Ronja is Val's favourite of those and I'm pretty sure I've heard good things about that one from all over. :D Will definitely be watching and/or reading when I feel competent enough. :)
