I got a library card from the Sumner library, where I used to go as a kid. Man! It has changed! With all the electronic stuff, I'm not sure what the librarians do all day. Apparently they spend their time being overly helpful. After I asked a question and received a satisfactory answer, two librarians kept me posted on new tidbits they'd found out ( Read more... )

Uh...the librarians are why all that electronic stuff is there.

That's true. I'm so grateful for the computerized stuff. It makes things so much easier. But the librarians used to check out books and help one find things. I suppose they still do that but are freed up to do other things with the help of computers. I bet the field has changed a lot in the last few years.

Helping people find things is what I spend most of my workday doing.

OTOH, I've never checked out a book to anyone in my life. (Mostly because that's what our parapro staff do. Unless it's a small library, librarians usually don't man the check out desk, shelve, or even do the cataloging. It's a weird division of labor but it seems to be the norm.)
