It depends on who its for and the situation around it. I think a well-written note can mean as much as any gift, and to us, means more than any possession that can be gifted...(poor choice of words, but you understand.) But sometimes, things like flowers, chocolate, wine/alcohol (booze is pretty customary around these parts) with a note are absolutely perfect in whatever situation.

If it's for a birthday and you're about 600 miles away, flowers can work. (hahaha.) It just varies so much depending on the situation I think. I think it really depends on the relationship with the receiver, and all that. I've gotten some really plain stupid gifts, especially when Jess was small. And while yes, the thought was what counted, there was zero practicality for a full snow-suit sized for a 3-6 month old when for a baby born at the beginning of March who's far too small for it, and by the time the following winter comes around, is far too big for it. I got a lot of really dumb gifts that had zero thought whatsoever put into it for her ( ... )

I have been getting gifts on Etsy.com. There are so many handcrafted gifts at reasonable prices and people are always thrilled with them.
