I was sitting in the dentist's office - while my kids were getting their teeth cleaned - when the report hit the air. I watched in horror. Everything changed that day. Innocence was shattered.
There was so much pain, so much loss that day. Two young men were so lost that they inflicted that pain on an entire community - an entire nation. I truly hope that we have re-evaluated the way that we treat kids with problems. I'm afraid at times that we haven't done enough. Internet bullying, fights at schools, it goes on.
My wish is that every child, no matter what age, would have an adult in their life who they can turn to. Every young person should feel loved.
Teachers are so important in the lives of our kids.
As a future educator I tend to be very aware of events like this too, and the inarguable impact they have on the way we teach and view our young people.
Good luck with your students some day. The fact that you've remembered and addressed this tells me you'll have an open door to any student who might need it. And that is probably one of the most important things educators can do.
