I have mainly stuck with ESRI so that is what I recommend. Is cost the reason you are avoiding it? If you or your friend is a student, you should be able to get the software at a drastically discounted rate.

If the analysis you are wanting to perform is based on a serious problem that is potentially threatening lives, then you may be able to go to area Universities that have a GIS program with your problem and allow them to perform the analysis.

I know the GIS program I graduated from loved getting problems like that to analyze. It's just a thought anyway.

Thank you -- I'm not sure what she wants besides what I was told and explained in that, but I'm sharing the information with her so she can decide. :)
