Charlie had had breakfast with her grandfather very early, then he had claimed he wanted to let her meet some of the other people around the school. In reality, she suspected he was up to something, but that didn't mean she didn't want to spend time with them

Nita was lying on her stomach on Carmela's bed, paging through what looked like a hardbound library book and frowning.

"Still out of ambit," she said, half to herself and half to Kit.

"What does 'ambit' mean?" Charlie asked, rolling the ball over to Kit. "It sounds like orbit."

"Sort of?" Kit reached out and snagged the ball with one hand, then asked it in the Speech, "You wouldn't mind rolling back over to Charlie, would you?"

The ball, obediently, did just that as he explained, "Basically it means that a wizard's location can't be pinpointed by the Manual, so he can't be contacted or anything. It's like radio and GPS silence."

Charlie cocked her head as the ball rolled back over to her, saying, "I still wish I could learn that. It has to be so convenient," as she floated it over to hover above Nita. "But Ronan's still okay, right?" she checked, biting her lip.
