YOU WENT TO HPLAND?!! Oh my god, I'm so jealous. :P I'm expecting a full report, Carla.
i don't think the SFX were that great, or that noticeable.
O___O Not even the Three Brothers narration? That was really good use of SFX imo.. but oh well.
And yes, I hope A.R. Rahman wins something too! As for the Academy snubbing Ryan Gosling..well. They always snub the ones who deserve the recognition the most, it seems. >____>
i did! and it was awesome! i will post a full report on it, pictures and everything, don't worry. ;)
right, i did notice the three brothers narration, and i thought it was really awesome. but i guess i thought of it as more of a media blending than a special effect. i know technically those are the same thing, but that's just the way it struck me. ^^;;;

I think Fincher is gonna get it for The Social Network. Even tho I'm not a huge fan of the movie, it really was beautifully directed.
As for best movie - of course Toy Story and Inception were nominated - my theory is that it only happened because they expanded the category, like last year with District 9 and Avatar. (Gone are the times when Beauty and the Beast won in that category). I'm thinking either Black Swan or King's Speech will win it.
IMO SciFi movies in general rarely win anything important on the Oscars - I'm thinking that's what the Academy hates - not Nolan per say. There are exceptions, of course - still, it only confirms the rule.
For example I think it would be awsome if the Academy gave SOME kind of an appreciation to the HP movies during the ceremony - or at least have the trio give an award as presenters or something - after all it was a whole decade of mega successful movies that defined a generation. Sadly, I don't think it will happen but still I hope.

knowing the academy, that's definitely true. i think inception would still deserve to be in the best picture run even if there were only five nominees-- i honestly think it was that good-- but i'm not in charge of the nominations, now am i? ^^;;;
also true that sci-fi doesn't get much love. but that's the thing about genres that get no love: when a movie comes along that completely breaks the mold and becomes something that reaches far out of its genre, that's the kind of movie they should be looking to nominate, more than any typical drama nominee. that's when you get stuff like rocky, the silence of the lambs or the lord of the rings-- movies that withstand the test of time and are so well-known for their genre-breaking that they become a part of popular culture without even trying too hard. and who orchestrates that success? the director, of course.
yeah, i figured it would pop up in one or two of the technical categories-- special effects definitely. i wasn't expecting costume design, though. ^^;;; still, it's good to see it around. if there's something burton's movies can do really well, is set a creepy ambiance. definitely like that the movie is getting recognized for that.
As for visual effects, you didn't like the effects for DH? Not even for the Tale of the Three Brothers? O.o why not? But I'd have to agree with you, I guess the SFX for DH wasn't all that, it was pretty much like the other HP movies' effects. Alice in Wonderland, I'm a sucker for those kind of movies, and the effects and cinematography were amazing, as well as their costume design :3
i did like the tale of three brothers! it was awesome, i just kind of think of it as a type of animation, more than outright special effects, for some reason. ^^;;; i'm really hoping alice will win in that category.
