i'm going into philosophy as a career, and even i agree with you that much of it is mental masturbation. it takes some getting used to, but once you see it in a positive light, you will realize that the entirety of your life is mandated by the flux of its fundamental concepts. many philosophy students start out frustrated and bewildered, and leave thoroughly changed, or at least influenced to think both rationally and abstractly about your internal and external worlds.

i hope you enjoy your class, or whatever philosophy you're working on.
