A book confession

The other day something I had been avoiding for a while now smacked me in the face. Well actually, it knocked one of my Ditmars off a shelf and broke it (it’s one that was probably glued together in the first place so can be easily fixed, I hope). I’ve been in denial about it but the truth is - I have never actually unpacked my books and put them ( Read more... )

I also hit a point in my life where I started to sell off books. The last time I moved, it was literally 10 feet straight up - I switched which floor of my house I live in, and which floor I rent out. There's nothing like a move that short, where you decide you don't need to get a bunch of friends to help, that does wonders for decluttering. After multiple trips up a flight of stairs, I reached the point where I started triaging things ( ... )

I have a rule that I'm not allowed to buy/keep a book unless I truly, truly love it. This rule has been in place for about 5 years. It means there are so many books I DON'T buy which is the only way to manage the, hmmm, 'problem' that I have!

I have a separate bookcase for my to-reads, a separate set of shelves for the I Read Them This Year, a little shelf of Years' Bests and All-time Favourites, and then the main sets in the study and the *ahem* library.

I don't really have "books I should just own". I very occasionally get something that I read a long time ago and really liked, but these tend to go straight onto the main shelves. Otherwise, purchases go straight onto the to-read shelves.

I rarely have more than a couple of books around that I haven't read. I'm cursed with a fast reading speed. There's part of a shelf that the library books sit on and any new books I've bought generally join them until read, at which time they're inserted alphabetically into my library. I've always had the practice of getting rid of any book that couldn't stand a reread. Recently I have started big time culling, helped by the fact that I got over urban fantasy/vampire fic in a big way and am shedding most of those. I used to like Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books until I saw the series, which was so over the top that I gave up watching it. So if anyone's looking for those ( ... )

When I last moved I had to cull my book pile down to "Books by people I know" and "Books I love intensely"

Massive boxes of books went to the Salvos even though I wanted to keep them, sigh.
