I am curious about what the pest management person said about, say, unopened boxes/bags of things. Should they be put into "hard" containers always, or only when opened?

I tend to save glass jars to put things in (my grandmother saves them for me too :-) ), plus I buy pickling jars which are cheap and come in large sizes. I personally prefer glass over plastic, for cleaning potential and reduced toxin release.

Don't know what the professionals say, but I have seen the results when mice chew their way into cardboard boxes and into plastic bags. Particularly when the other stuff is safely away in canisters, the little buggers get desperate!!

And all my life I've watched women have kitchens with all this storage stuff and thought it was totally anal and extra work to come in form the shops and open all your packets and tip them into containers.

I do it cos it's the fun part of shopping!
I hate shopping

I do a big monthly shop.
At the moment, I use Coles, but I usually just do it on a daycare day, so it's only once a month.

Yeah, I came to pantry storage after I found a mouse in my rental apartment in London. He was kinda cute but probably had friends and the pantry was a mess. Since then I have always decanted. I do get a bit slack at times about the pasta packets etc but feel the damage will be minimised which is better than nothing. Also containers are great for keeping weevils and moths under control. Just the other night I got out one of my flour containers to find moths in it! But they were trapped! So the whole lot got chucked but the rest of the pantry is ok.

I am good with jars for open things, but I tend to leave things in their original bags until opened. Maybe I need to reconsider :-)

Ah but you can give quilts as gifts, espec. for weddings, babies and milestone birthdays... which cuts down on the number in the house.
