I once argued with an ex about the greenhouse effect. He said there was no proof it was manmade. I said that CO2 in the atmosphere had doubled (at least) in the past 50+ years and that CO2 causes sunlight to be caught in the atmosphere. His reply: there was no proof it was the direct cause.
Lack of direct proof does not fail a theory.
And he reckoned he had a scientific background. *sighs*
