According to my advisor, who is deeply involved in conservation and systematics in this region, the proper spelling is actually Guayana Shield. Guyana Shield is apparently the colonial and hence offensive spelling.
This assuming you are referring to the mountain formation in countries beyond just Guyana.
Hmmm...very interesting. I've seen that one, too, but most often in older publications. That spelling seems to be used much most often in connection with Venezuela, as far as I can see from a quick Google search.
...and from that I gather that you mean the *British* colonial spelling is considered offensive by someone. The "G" presumably originates from a Spanish colonial modification of an indigenous word.
Oy, I guess it doesn't matter so much. The reviewers will probably have something to say about it anyway. =) I'll use "Guayanan and Brazilian Shields" for now, I guess.
