It's been awhile! Never quite got around to reinventing this journal, and I want a place to share my current Superboy/Young Justice/New 52 thoughts and this seemed like a place, so.

Basically, Superboy. )

My friend thought that the Robin was Jason Todd because his laugh was a tad on the Joker-ish side (which I couldn't disagree with).

This is true! Unfortunately, I think the Robin has been positively IDed as Dick, so maybe the Joker has some explaining to do or someone accidentally inhaled a little too much joker-gas one time.

"I am heavily invested in this character, and I am still having a hard time caring about him. Created to be a weapon? Okay. Go with that. Let him explore what that means and find out where he belongs. Because then when it turns out that he has been masterminded into existence/no one knows who his human donor is/he contains a killing trigger/ he may have no empathy, then we might actually be able to care. Throwing all of that into the first 10 or so issues is overkill."

From a story-crafting perspective, I agree. You have to get the audience invested in the character BEFORE you slam them with their angsty backstory. "This is X and his life sucks" is not really a great enticement to engage with a character. >.>

I really worry that DC has forgotten that -- or maybe because the universe got so big and twisted and huge, they don't remember how to start at the beginning? Or possibly, it is because the writing team knows they have a limited time on the series and want to make sure they get all their plot ideas out there before they're moved on -- just found out today that the writer for all this has apparently been shifted elsewhere so who knows what will happen now!

Hi Mikke!

Hi! I'm actually over in Marvel comics-verse these days, sorta. XD

The sad thing is that New 52 was ostensibly a reboot to try to pull in new readers, but pretty much all the choices they've made seem designed to ensure that new readers would fail to get engaged. :\

Marvel is pretty much the better choice, I think.

On the plus side, I have 5 chapters of the sequel to Vampyres and Zhombies posted! I did not think that was going to happen, so I guess new 52 isn't all bad.

I keep meaning to watch the Young Justice show because it's by Greg Weisman, who did Gargoyles, which is one of my favorite shows. But somehow I can never motivate myself to actually do it. And buying the New 52 always seems like so much work. But I do love TTK.

Apparently people who are not as terribly biased as I am also liked Young Justice -- season 1 got an emmy or something? But Cartoon Network keeps on juggling it around in the schedule so you'd have to make an effort to see it. Not really sure what's going on there!

I just recently got into Young Justice and DC comics (mainly because of Batman fandom). I adore Robin in Young Justice! Superboy is adorable too, and I also thought that the two episode pilot was extremely strong. Some of the other episodes have been hit or miss, but overall I'm really enjoying it. I have noticed that the audience for it skews younger than most of my fandoms which I think is the reason for the lack of good fic and the ridiculous shipping wars on tumblr. I'm currently trying to convert all my friends who write over to Young Justice so that we can get some good fic!

I haven't read much of the New 52 yet, but I've heard bad things about the writer of Teen Titans. Apparently he's not the best at characterizations, and has done a lot of somewhat sexist stuff in Red Hood and the Outlaws. It's a shame because I would really like to read Teen Titans and some of the other titles he writes.

It might be a good thing that I've been away from the fandom so long as to be totally ignorant of writer reputations and that, but this does put the re-telling of Cassie's origins into even skeevier ground.
