Summary: AU. When his friends drag Jin to an amusement park, he knows he won’t escape the dreaded visit to the Haunted Mansion, but as it turns out, sitting in a car and slowly driving through rooms dressed into horror movie themed décor is the least of Jin’s problems. Luckily there’s Kame, the hot and courageous guy who checked their tickets earlier…
A/N: Guys look, we did a thing! Like... almost 40k of things. Let us know what you think, and if we should do another thing someday ;)
Jin wasn't a Halloween type of guy.
He liked Christmas. Snow, eggnog, cookies of all sizes and shapes, overpriced special holiday flavored macchiatos at Starbucks, and even the ever present carols playing on a loop in crowded malls. Christmas was Jin's kind of holiday.
Halloween, not so much.
He did like to dress up, and he certainly wasn't one to turn down a party invitation, no matter the occasion.
However, dressing up as a Final Fantasy character and dancing all night was one thing---and being dragged to the local amusement park that currently hosted about as many skeleton and pumpkin decorations as people, some of them also dressed up as skeletons or pumpkins, was a different story.
He'd managed to avoid joining Pi and Ryo on their Halloween tradition the last three years under the excuse of going out with his brother Reio and some of his friends, but now that Reio had a girlfriend, the evening had become a couple-thing. Jin didn't have a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend. Being all alone on all major holidays was, apparently, a part of gay culture now.
He wasn't complaining about spending time with Ryo and Pi. As long as they didn't try to pull off some scary shit.
So far so good.
They'd enjoyed some of the rides, occupied the bumper cars for probably longer than the kids waiting in the line behind them would've liked, Jin had located exactly three coffee stands, and liked the one by an old looking carousel the best, and overall the day was fun. Ryo had only attempted a poor trick to scare Jin as they had been waiting for one of the rides.
Now the guy was suspiciously quiet, as the three of them were standing in the middle of a crossroad and Jin and Pi were looking around to decide what to do next.
Pi nudged Jin and pointed to the left, eyebrows twitching up.
"No fucking way," Jin groaned, just like he'd done already three times before.
They'd somehow managed to avoid the shabby looking Haunted Mansion for a good part of the time since the moment they'd walked through the entrance gate. Jin had no doubts it wasn't a coincidence, but rather a well thought plan to lull him into believing he'd be spared the experience. It must have been opened only recently after a major renovation because he had a vague memory of the house having been closed a couple years ago after an accident of sorts. Had it been up to him, the attraction would've stayed under lock forever.
Jin had no desire to check that place up too close.
At the same time, though, he had a feeling it was only a matter of time before he'd be standing in the line with a ticket in his hand.
Ryo could be very convincing.
Pi laughed. "You can't run from it forever."
"Watch me," Jin grumbled.
As Pi was drawing up a breath to tease Jin some more, he was interrupted by Ryo's sudden move. "Let's go check over there." And without hesitation, Ryo set off somewhere into the nearest crowd, making his way through people, teenagers enjoying their festive dates and families trying and failing to stick together as their costumed kids ran around and mingled together in a mess of masks and squeals.
After finally breaking free of a family of small Power Rangers, Jin finally got a good look at what had excited Ryo so much. It was the Strong Man game, and Jin really shouldn't have been surprised.
Ryo was kind of well known in their small circle of friends for being slightly insecure about his manliness. Perhaps it was his short stature, Jin wasn't sure. But Ryo was always trying to prove his strength. Sometimes Jin wondered if that's what inspired him to join law enforcement and become a cop. Maybe he'd never know.
Jin and Pi came to a halt in front of the High Striker right as the park worker finished explaining the rules of the game. Just hit the base with the mallot and ring the bell and you win.
It seemed simple enough. Hell, maybe Jin would even try it himself. Not that he had any doubts about his own strength, but maybe it would delay their trip to the Haunted Mansion for a little bit longer.
He was distracted from his thoughts when two girls, probably around the same age as him, walked up to watch Ryo take his first swing. Ryo saw them too, as he could tell by the way his stature changed.
The girls were super pretty. Jin would have had to be blind not to notice. Both of them were wearing cat ear headbands in a half hearted attempt to dress up. One of them was even wearing black heels and Jin wondered how women were capable of such amazing feats.
"Oh god," Pi nudged Jin and leaned over to whisper to him. "He's got that look on his face. He's gonna be a dumbass and try to show off. I can hardly stand to watch."
Jin tried to suppress his chuckle, but he couldn't help it. The cringe was very real. Ryo puffed up his chest and swung down hard, missing the bell by mere inches. Jin could see the crimson creep up the side of Ryo's face in his embarrassment.
"That was pretty good," the girl with the heels said. Jin could tell she wasn't mocking Ryo in any way, but he was pretty sure Ryo didn't hear it that way.
"Don't worry, I'm just warming up," Ryo said as he eyed her, cracking his neck before lifting the mallot again. "This is kid's play."
Another swing, and the miss was far more than just a few inches this time. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion and Jin couldn't look away.
Before Ryo could utter a word, Jin watched as the girl in heels started slipping them off of her feet and handed them to her friend. She walked up and snatched the mallot right out of Ryo's hands.
"Don't hurt yourself, big guy. Carnival games are hardly worth it," she grinned. Ryo gaped at her, but she pushed him back out of the way. "My dad used to work for a circus, so I got to play with these things a lot. It's all about finding your balance," she said as she straightened her stance and adjusted her grip.
Jin watched in awe as her down swing landed so hard that the bell rang almost instantly. How so much power came from such a small little frame, Jin wasn't sure. But he was very sure that he never wanted to do anything to piss her off.
"That...was amazing," Pi said as he noticeably shook himself out of his awe.
"Aww, you're sweet," the girl smiled. Then proceeded to walk over and ruffle Pi's hair before retreating to her friend to put her shoes back on. "See you guys around," she waved. And then they both disappeared into the crowd as if they'd never been there.
"Damn, dude. That was the sickest burn I've seen all year. Are you okay over there?" Pi asked as he turned towards Ryo who was watching the direction the girls left in.
"Never talk about this. To anyone. Ever."
Ryo's growled words made Jin laugh out loud for real this time, and he didn't even feel bad about the death glare that landed on him.
"Just for that, Akanishi, We're going in the Haunted Mansion next," Ryo smirked.
"Shit."

Up close the house didn't look as scary as its name could suggest. It was a big structure with walls covered in dark timber and boarded-up windows, a three floor tower on one end and a neon sign on the other. It looked very much like the theme park attraction it was.
Jin just needed to remember that while inside.
"I can't believe you're making me do this," he complained as they stopped at the end of the short queue at the ticket booth. Just in front of them a group of kids in their late teens were loudly pouncing at each other. If they were to be just as loud during the ride, their shrieks might be a good indication of where the really scary spots were.
Ryo smirked, patting Jin's shoulder. "Look at the bright side."
"I don't think there's anything bright inside that thing," Pi pointed out. Why was Jin friends with these two again?
"Not helping," Jin pouted.
Ryo ignored them both and continued, "The only witnesses of your tragic girly shrieks will be our poor eardrums."
The queue moved forward.
"I can't believe I'm being punished because you couldn't hit hard enough." Jin glared at Ryo.
"I so could've."
"Hey, maybe if you two keep this argument on, Jin won't notice all the spooky stuff during the ride," Pi laughed.
Jin pushed his hands deep into the front pockets of his ripped jeans. "I hate both of you."
The boys in front of them bought their tickets and moved up the few creaky steps leading to the embarking spot. An open car for four was already waiting for them, and all five of them squeezed inside.
Jin took a step closer to the booth, head still turned after the boys, watching their car slowly move towards the opening gate. A thick cobweb stretched from one top corner to the other, reaching down just to brush the heads of people entering in the cars.
Okay, a plastic cobweb was silly.
Maybe this ride wouldn't be as bad---
"Hi, welcome to the Haunted Mansion, where all your worst nightmares come to life."
Jin's head immediately turned to the sound of the voice. In front of him, behind the ticket taking counter, sat the most attractive guy Jin had seen possibly ever. All thoughts of terrifying ghouls and asshole friends left his head as he stared straight into pretty brown eyes lined with dark kohl.
The guy waiting for Jin’s ticket was young, with soft features that could be easily mistaken for feminine, but Jin was close enough to see the person in front of him was very much male. From the look of it, the little pout and a frown between the guy’s trimmed eyebrows, a bored male. Dark hair was just slightly wavy and looked soft and kind of fluffy, and Jin wasn’t one to crave to touch random people’s hair… but maybe he was now.
Who would have guessed that coming in here would be worth it after all.
"Is it just the three of you?" the pretty guy asked, and Jin nodded as he reached down to hand him his ticket. He noticed a name tag attached to a simple, tight fitting blue t-shirt with the park’s logo printed over the whole chest, and smiled.
"Kame? Is that a nickname or something?" Jin asked, trying to keep it light in case the other wasn't interested. He wasn't keen on getting hit in the face by a straight man, after all. However luck seemed to be with him this night, and he watched as Kame slowly reached out to take his ticket, fingers purposely lingering against his own. For a brief moment, the frown disappeared from Kame’s face, making him even more attractive.
"It's just a play on my last name," Kame grinned as he tore the ticket in half and handed Jin the stub. "Maybe if you come back through, I'll tell you my real name," he teased.
Jin couldn't stop his smile. "If I survive this ride I will probably come back and hide in your lobby with you until closing time."
"It's a deal then," Kame said, just as Jin's attention was stolen by Ryo.
"Come on, Jin. We don't have all freaking night. Quit flirting with the ticket boy and get your ass moving."
Jin rolled his eyes. "Ignore him. A girl just beat him at the High Striker and now he's just bitter and mean."
"Akanishi I swear I am gonna beat your ass before this night is over," Ryo groused, and Jin just rolled his eyes again. As he began to walk away towards the ride entrance, a hand on his wrist stopped him and pulled him back.
"For the record, it's a very nice ass," Kame grinned before letting him go. Jin nearly walked straight into the wall when he turned around, but caught himself at the last moment.
At least now he had something to focus on while trying to endure the creep show. He shuddered. He was so not ready for this.
Their car arrived just as they walked up the stairs, and Jin noticed there was no track on the floor.
"It runs on Wi-Fi now, isn't it cool?" Pi beamed. Clearly, while Jin had been busy ogling Kame, Pi had read all the signs on the wall by the ticket counter. "Like that it can move more freely around the rooms."
Ryo nudged Jin, pushing him down into the front seat. "You know what that means? More spooky stuff!"
“Great.” What else was Jin supposed to say.
Jin got comfortable, sprawling in the seat while his friends slipped into the back, forced to press their sides together a little tighter.
"It has thirteen rooms with interactive scenes, some of them with actors playing their parts, others use special effects to give the best horror impression. Each room presents a classic horror movie," Pi went on. "I wonder if I can recognize the movies the scenes were taken from... Just keep me the hell away from little girls crawling out of TV screens."
Jin shivered.
"Shut up, Pi."
Because if he were to name one movie that had seriously fucked him up, that one would be pretty high on the list.
Something beeped and the car started moving. Jin briefly considered jumping out of it and letting his friends go alone. He'd much rather spend the next thirty minutes just standing by the ticket booth and getting to know Kame's real name. And perhaps his phone number.
They drove under the cobweb, leaving the fresh air of a slowly falling evening, and heading right into dim lights, strange scents, and dull, gloomy music.
