Thanks to alliebean02, I see that all my earlier hypothesizing about a DW movie was not entirely a fantasy trip.

At the bottom of an article which contains a casting spoiler for SJA, the BBC reports:

Doctor Who may be heading for the big screen after a spokeswoman for BBC Films confirmed that "a script is in development."

Although there's no guarantee, the timing of it all doesn't make sense to me if they were going to have Steven Moffat producing and Matt Smith starring in this movie. They can't do the movie and the TV series at the same time. However, with RTD and DT seguing off of the show, they are suddenly, conveniently available for a movie! So I can't imagine how they'd do the movie with anyone BUT David Tennant and Russel T Davies.

Once again your logic has won me over. It makes so much sense. And it would give them enough time to do it really well if they aren't bound to a TV shooting schedule. I wonder though, how they'd do it if the rest of the DW team is working on the series (ie special effects and stuff) I guess they'd hire other people but still, that would be interesting.

You're very right: Scheduling wise, they would definitely have to hire in new crews for the rest of the team.

Normally this would be my chance to sound superior and brilliant while I talk about the differences between shooting for TV and shooting for movies, and how they'd have to have a different crew for everything anyway. But considering the high production values of the DW shoots, I'm honestly not informed enough to say whether they would have needed different a different production team or not! I've done several shoots, but never any with the kind of complicated and expensive productions that DW contains.

I'm back again. After reading the second article you posted I see there may be another way they could bring DT back for a movie:

According to several well-informed Whovians, including /Film reader Mark Kardwell at Bad Librarianship, the Tennant-Smith regeneration could well be happening off screen. That seems to leave the door open for Tennant to appear in a feature film, thereby keeping the most popular Dr. alive and not interfering with the production schedule of the show.

Although, some of the spoilery things we've looked at recently wouldn't leave much room for this scenario (I won't be specific since I don't want to spoil anyone else who reads this).

And, like you mentioned in regards to the "pre-regeneration" option, messing with canon could affect Moffat's vision for the show. Unless they collaborated on it, but that seems unlikely with the way RTD seems to like running things.

Yup, I agree with you on all points. I'm very doubtful about a regeneration happening off-screen, only to be later depicted in a movie. Aside from the very valid reasons you mentioned, a movie could be years away from hitting theaters. RTD wants to give DT a huge send-off: not skip his regeneration entirely until the movie comes out in theaters.

Exactly. A Pete's Universe movie makes much more sense. And RTD is smart. I'm sure he'd find a way to make it exciting enough to draw classic who fans to it too. He's actually pretty good at balancing the shippiness with the other stuff IMO. Not that I'm complaining about the shippiness. I'm becoming one of the biggest Rose/Doctor fans there is! :) (And it's all your fault *grin*)

I was mentioning this to Laura on my earlier post, but it sadly seems that many Classic Who fans are turned off by the vast differences between this generation of DW, including the shippiness. But to be perfectly honest, the BBC is elated with the ratings they're getting. So I rather think that if they do go forward with this movie, they are going to be more concerned with focusing on their for-sure demographic (the people who are currently watching DW and loving David Tennant) than their former demographic (the people who watched Classic Who, but who may or may not ever be interested in the new show under any possible circumstances).

Oh my gosh, you and me both! I'm fully aware that there are a lot of hurdles and it's still very possible that this will never happen, but still, this is pretty encouraging!
