It was a very chilly December afternoon. A cool breeze blew softly through the trees as Teddy took his seat beside the lake. December was as cold and dreary as ever. He was usually comfortable with what happened during the month - Hogsmeade trips, Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve. But it was always the same; nothing new really happened. Only this time, it felt like everything was happening rather too soon-sooner than he expected anyway, and that unsettled him. He hadn’t really come to terms with the fact that this would be his last year at Hogwarts.
Of course, he would spend his time with Harry and the Weasleys as always. That was what happened every year. And she would be there-Victoire-cheerful and in the brightest of spirits. It was almost funny. They had been friends ever since he could remember. She had always been Victoire, his best friend. Yet in all these years he had never thought of her as anything more, not until a few days ago, at least. His feelings for her had changed, and even though she was the one person who knew everything about him-well, almost everything anyway-he couldn’t quite muster up the courage to talk to her about this.
He shook his head and smiled bleakly. Once or twice, he had wondered how it would be if things were a bit different during December. If she knew of his feelings, would things be any better? Perhaps, he would be able to take her out on a Hogsmeade trip, hold her warm hands in the cold and kiss her under the Mistletoe. He would have liked that. It would be something new, something special. He sighed, turning to look at the still water of the lake. He sat there motionlessly for quite some time.
‘Teddy!’ called a familiar voice from behind.
He turned back, finding a very red Victoire Weasley standing with her arms crossed. She looked slightly flushed from the cold. He spotted the grimace on her face and realised that she was also annoyed. It was rather funny when she got angry because her nostrils flared up and her ears turned pink. Teddy tried not to smile and anger her any further. He had discovered through experience that it wasn’t a very good idea to be on Victoire’s bad books.
‘What?’ asked Teddy, trying to hold back a smile.
‘What are you doing out in the cold? Are you trying to catch a flu?’
‘Maybe,’ he said, shrugging his shoulders. ‘It would be interesting.’
‘Shut up,’ she said sternly, catching the smile on his face. ‘Let’s go inside - I’m not letting you succeed in whatever crazy plans you might have.’
‘What if my plan is a good one?’ Teddy asked timidly. ‘Would you approve of it?’
‘Yes,’ she said, starting to drag him back towards the castle. ‘As long as it does not concern you doing crazy things.’
‘I assure you it isn’t crazy,’ Teddy said, feeling somewhat relieved. ‘It’s a good plan.’
Perhaps he had nothing to be afraid of. If he could just find the right moment to tell Victoire everything, maybe things would be different for him this time. Perhaps December wouldn’t be as bleak and monotonous as always. He allowed himself a small hopeful smile as he and Victoire reached the front doors of the castle.
